A FATHER DIED FOR HIS DAUGHTER’ s MARRIAGE AFFAIRS

Buthidaung, January 30: A father was dead on January

13, 2003, for his daughter’s marriage affairs to a

young man without getting permission from Nasaka

(border security force). The dead person was Sultan

Ahamed, 45, son of late Mv. Ahamed Hussein, hailing

from Taung Bazar of Buthidaung Township in Arakan

State, according to our source.

Although the both of parents of couple had applied to

Nasaka authorities for marriage permission, they

(Nasaka) didn’t response any information to the

applicants. In this connection, the bride Salima

Khatoon, 20, daughter of Sultan Ahamed and the

bridegroom Anight Ullah, 25, son of Kafayat Ullah of

same village were secretly married according to the

Islamic law on October first week, 2002 after getting

permission of both parents, he further added.

On information, the Nasaka went to the bride house on

November 2nd week, 2002 and arrested both of father

and daughter for his daughter’s marriage to a young

boy of the same village. The victim was severely

beaten by Nasaka as a chronic heart disease patient;

he has been unconscious condition for long time while

he was beaten. Both of them were detained in Nasaka

camp.

However, daughter was released after five days

bribing some money to the Nasak but her father was

jailed one month in Buthidaung jail. Later, he was

also released giving some bribe to the Nasaka

authorities, he further added.

In the meantime, the bridegroom and his father had

gone into hidden. Later on, an under standing was

reached between father of the bridegroom and Nasaka

authorities after bribing some money.

But, the bridegroom had crossed the Burma-Bangladesh

border to avoid the arrest. After crossing the border,

he tried to enter again his motherland but Nasaka

canceled his list from the family list. So, he cannot

able to enter his country and lost his motherland

forever for only loving affairs. Now, he is wondering

at border area like a mad cow that lost her calf, said

a relative of victim to our source, said a relative of

victim to our source.

But, there were some various formalities have been

imposed since 1999 on the new   Rohingya couples,

intending to marry. They have to get recommendation

letters from Village Peace and Development Council

(VPDC), Township PDC, Nasaka and the other from the

Health Assistant. The bridegroom has attained the age

of 20 and the bride 18. Not more than 3 children shall

be born and the bridegroom can take no more wives. The

new couple has to pay about Kyats 50,000/- to SPDC

authorities to get permission, he further added.

The victim was unable to go to Sittwe (State capital)

for proper medical treatment as movement restriction

of Rohingya people. Suddenly, on 13th January 2003, he

passed away after bleeding from his heart because he

got severe wounds in his heart while the Nasaka beat

him, said another relative of victim to our source.

He has not left any arable land for his daughters and

son because the army confiscated his all arable lands.

His wife is also a handicapped since 10 years back. He

has left 2 daughters and one son. They all are under

15 years. How can they survive under the ill-fated

mother’s look after?, he further said.

For me, it is very strange, broken-hearted,

unforgettable and regrettable as before his death he

asked me some help for medical treatment, but I could

not give him any assistance while he was helpless and

hapless because of empty pocket. I (writer) am the

elder brother of him. I could not see my parents,

sisters, brothers and relatives who had already gone

to eternal and the victim (my younger brother) has

gone forever! Forever! Forever! I will never see him

again! Isn’t the result of SPDC’s contribution!

Similarly, in August 2002, a young girl, 19, and a

young boy, 22, both of them are hailing from Nan

Sadaung Village of Maungdaw Township, Arakan State

were married without permission of Nasaka authorities.

In this connection, Nasaka arrested the couple and

sent them to the Maungdaw police station. After 5 days

later, the bride was jailed for six-months and the

bridegroom was 7 and a half years on August 2002.

Though the judge of Maungdaw Town in Arakan State

reluctant to give verdict to the couple, the Commander

of the Nasaka headquarters of Maungdaw Town forcibly

ordered him to give them jail verdict, said a trader

of Maungdaw town to our source.

At present, only in Maungdaw Township, there are

about 100 applications were submitted to the Nasaka

headquarters to get marriage permission. But, the

applicants do not get any response till the date, said

a schoolteacher to our source.
