A teenager and a woman from Kyauk-kadin village, Yepyu Township of Tenasserim Division in southern Burma were raped by the Burmese Army soldiers. Although the villagers complained to take action against the rapers for the cases, the commander of the Burmese Army denied it according to a villager from this village who arrived the border recently.

“(Ms) Mi Yu, 18 years old, daughter of Daw Sun, was raped by Burmese Army soldier from Light Infantry Battalion No.282 on September 3’s night at her house after her family was threatened to be killed if they shout,” said Mr. Nai Toe, a medic worker where Ms. Mi Yu had injection at his clinic.

“(Ms) Mi Kyan Yit, 24 years old married woman was also raped by the same battalion soldier from LIB No.282 when she went to the river for a bathing.   She was also threatened to be killed if she asked for help when the soldier raped her”, said Mr. Nai Toe, a former New Mon State Party medic worker, who was seriously beaten and forced not to live in the village after he was arrested with a suspicion of rebel.

“(Ms) Mi Yu case is very cruel. The villagers can’t take the action for her”, Mr. Toe who arrived the border areas to escape from the arrest said.

“Her mother told me an officer of Burmese Army climbed up her house and told her he would like to have sex with her daughter. He gave her with some money but she denied and she was afraid to accept it. But she had to allow him what he do. If someone from her family shout for help, all of her family will be killed. The army officer raped her daughter at that night,” Mr. Toe explained what Ms. Mi Yu’s mother told him on the case of rape.

In the next morning (Ms. Mi Yu mother) Daw Sun and Kyuak-kadin village headmen went to meet LIB No.282 commander and complained about the rape case to him. But the commander denied it. The commander also shouted to them and he denied that his soldier is not cruel like in the complaint, said Mr. Toe as he listened from Daw Sun.

“Even (Ms) Mi Kyan Yit case, nobody can take action. Her family had kept silence. However if the Burmese Army does not stop it military operation against the Mon splinter groups such violations against women will not stop in his village,” said, Mr. Toe.   The local village has about 300 households and Mr. Toe also created a clinic.   After accusation of a rebel, the clinic which was worth about 800,000 Kyat was seized by the soldiers.

In Yebyu Township, and Southern Ye Township, Burmese Army has been launching a military offensive to a Mon splinter group called Hongsawatoi Restoration Party (HRP) and have violated many human rights abuses on the Mon people.

During the military operation, Burmese Army based in the villages does not launch serious offensives but just close the villages in to stop the rebels to not get access to foods and communication from the civilians.

During the period from December 2003 to February 2004, there are a of sexual violations against the by the Burmese Army’s soldiers happened in Ye and Yebyu Townships and over 10 villagers were summarily killed according to Human Rights Foundation of Monland.
