Ferry association set a new rule restricting the ceased-fire groups to not use boat ferry by force where those groups always use it along Zami river, a main route in rainy season from Three-Pagoda-Pass border town to a town in Karen State, Kya-inn-seikyi.

“We do not allow cease-fire armed groups to use boat ferries by force along the route from Three-Pagoda-Pass– Kya-inn-seikyi.   We will only allow the government officers to use those ferries as they like,” said Mr. U Than Win, Boat Ferry Transport Association chairperson.

“We allow them to have special ferry, but these groups need to pay. We will reduce the price for them, but they could pay only the price gasoline like the previous years,” he added.

He also confirms that after the new set rule, there is no boat ferry will be used by force.

“The association also will not allow the trader to carry their goods with their own ferries and every trader has to transport with the association arranged ferries with the set high price”, said a trader Mr. Nai Kong Hmarn.

“Even we belong ferry and we are member of the association, we have to pay tax for carrying goods and we also lose using our own boats,” Mr. Hmarn added.

The boat ferries started in transport of passengers and goods recently after the heavy rain and enough water level in the river soon after the transport along Three-Pagoda-Pass – Thanbyuzayart motor road ceased.

A lot of passengers are traveling on this water route by paying a high price in comparison with the last year.

“The ferry price jumps up to 4, 000.00 Kyat over last year price.   Last year we had to pay only 9, 000.00 Kyat per head and now it has 13, 000.00 Kyat per head just for one way,” Mr. Hmarn said.

Although the ferry price has jumped up, the number of people who traveling in this water route have not been reduced because of they have no or change other route for transport and travel back and forth to the border, the ferry association source said.

There are six ferry groups involve in transport in Zami river, and they are: Ramonya, Than Myan Thu, Nyien Chan Maung, Pan Ya Kon, Chaung Zone and other new boat group, which is founded for fund raising for the Three-Pagoda-Pass Township Peace and Development Council or Township authorities.

According to the Association Chairperson said, “there are more 20 boat ferries joined to association.”   Last year this association has about 50 ferries and now it has more than 70 ferries in transport along the Zami River.
