Forestry environment is in the southern Burma in danger

SPDC supported a Karen armed group, Democratic Karen Buddhist Army (DKBA) has cut thousands tons of trees in forests locates southern part of Burma and even in the civilians’ house gardens.

A Mon trader who came from the northern part of Ye Township said to IMNA, “they even go and cut trees in the villagers’ gardens.   The villagers are not dared to bar the soldiers.   Burmese soldiers also did not bar them”.

DKBA entered into forestry area in the northeastern part of Ye Township and cut thousands tons of trees in their logging business, said by a local New Mon State Party official.

DKBA receives logging concessions from the regime’s forestry department and cut big trees that close to the New Mon State Party controlled area and sometimes entered into the Party area, accused by a NMSP official.

Not only in northeastern part of Ye Township, DKBA’s Headquarters near Pa-an town, Karen State, also cut thousands tons of logs in Pa-an Township area and Battalion No. 999 also cut thousands tons of logs in Pegu (Pago) mountain range in Pegu Division under the logging concessions with the regime.   They normally bring these logs and lumbers to Mon State and Karen State for house building and other uses.   Lumber traders and businessmen have been much relied on DKBA in logging business.

DKBA is a surrendered group to the regime, which is different from the ceasefire groups, and receives more business opportunity because they are not involving in any political activities.   Most the ceasefire groups like New Mon State Party and other groups did not surrender to the regime, but constantly call for the political dialogue.

The local battalion of Burmese Army also cut trees in forests with any concession if they have opportunity.  The soldiers from Burmese Army also cut teaks on Zami riverbank in Kya-inn-seikyi Township of Karen State.

To promote their logging concession, DKBA also sold their lumbers to Buddhist monks at low price, who needed to build or extend monasteries in Mon State and Karen State.   DKBA also does not pay illegal tax to any Burmese Army’s battalions along the way while they bring logs.   Normally, the local battalions always took illegal tax from traders while they passed their checkpoints.

Small numbers of civilians also cut trees in Yebyu Township in Tenasserim Division by paying tax to several armed groups.  These traders did not get big concessions as DKBA receives from the regime.
