Students and displaced persons learned basic human rights

Over 20 students and displaced persons learned one week long basic human rights training course in a Mon refugee resettlement site, Halockhani, that was organized by the community education workers in the Thailand-Burma border area.

One week course of basic human rights training started from August 17 and completed on August 23 and the high school Mon students from various Township of Mon State and displaced persons from border communities participated in training.

“The time is too limited and we have no much resource here. The participants would like to know more”, said by a training organizer in the site.

He added that the members of Human Rights Foundation of Monland also acted as trainers or facilitators in the training. Half of the participants were women and the organizers arranged for ‘gender balance’ in the training.

The training provides about 30 Articles of Universal Declaration of Human Rights; Convention of the Rights of the Child; Human Rights and Gender Issues; and Human Rights and Health Perspectives.

Training organizers or education workers in the community could organize students from Mudon Township, Thanbyuzayat Township, Ye Township in Mon State and from Kawkareik Township in Karen State. The displaced persons from nearby communities in Three Pagoda Pass Township also attended one-week training.

The organizer said that the young generation of Mon people must know the concept of ‘human rights’, because many of them have heard about it, but they did not really know what it is.

According to a displaced person, she did not really know about her villagers’ rights, which are daily violated in the rural community and now she said he could understand more.

The organizers said that after getting feedback from the participants, they would plan to have another training next year by coordinating with Human Rights Foundation of Monland.
