Arrest of 6 Mon monks and 8 civilians in Pegu and restriction against Mon monastery

On May 17, a Mon monastery in Pegu was totally restricted from the people moving in and out after the special police branch arrested 6 monks and 8 civilians in there in late last month.

Last month on April 29, the police special branch and No. 3 police station in Pegu went into a Mon monastery, Tasaik-jot-loka, in western part of Pegu and arrested 6 Mon monks and 8 civilians.   They also disrobed one Mon monk, the abbot of that monastery, U Kesara, and detained many other monks and civilians without any trial, said by a Mon monk from Pegu.

“Accordingly to Buddhism principles, they (the polices) need to ask the permission of the Chairperson of Sangha Association to disrobe one monk.   And then, if the monk is guilty, they could send to the court by the permission of Chairperson”, said by a monk to IMNA.

The polices led by an officer, Zaw Min Aung, disrobed the abbot of Mon monastery, U Kesara, with allegation of misusing of forged stamps.   They also the monks in the monastery U Wimala, U Kema, U Wisaya, U Wareida and U Panita but did not disrobe them.  They also arrested 8 civilians Min Wimala, Mi Khin Zar Maw, Mi Nan Mu Aung, Mi Than Kyi, Mi Suu Hlaing and Min Maung Toe and most of them came from Mon State to worship the pagoda in Pegu.

All of them are now in detention without trial since April 29 and the reason for arresting of 5 monks (except the abbot) and 8 civilians is not known.
