EU urges immediate release of Myanmar opposition leader

PORTO CARRAS, Greece, June 20 (AFP) - The European Union called Friday on

the military junta in Myanmar to immediately release jailed opposition leader

Aung San Suu Kyi, who has been held in a notorious prison for three weeks.

In conclusions reached after an EU summit in northern Greece, EU leaders

urged  "the Burmese authorities immediately to release .. Aung San Suu Kyi as

well as other members of the national league for democracy (NLD)."

They also urged Yangon to reopen the offices of the opposition NLD and

urged the EU presidency to make contact with Asian partners to draw up

positions on her jailing with them.

Britain summons Myanmar ambassador over Suu Kyi's detention

LONDON, June 20 (AFP) - Britain's government said it had Friday summoned

Myanmar's London ambassador, Kyaw Win, to express grave concern over the

detention of Myanmar democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi.

"I told ambassador Win that I was appalled by events in Burma (Myanmar),"

Britain's junior foreign minister for Asia, Mike O'Brien, said in a written

statement.

"The UK does not believe the regimes claims that Aung San Suu Kyi is being

held for her own protection. If this were true, why could I not speak to her

on her birthday?"

O'Brien said that his attempts to telephone Kyi -- said by Britain to be in

Yangon's notorious Insein jail -- had been rebuffed.

"This was simply not acceptable," O'Brien said.

He added: "I stressed to the ambassador that the international community

wanted to encourage change in Burma and that we did not want to see the

political process there go into reverse."

O'Brien said he had asked Win to see him again on June 25 when he said he

hoped "to hear positive news on access" to Suu Kyi.
