The EU Presidency notes with great concern
the latest developments in Burma/Myanmar, in particular the acts undertaken by
the regime against the democratic opposition.
The Presidency deplores the decision of
the Burmese authorities to detain the NLD Leader and her party officials, to
close down the NLD offices and to suspend the activities of the universities
throughout
the country.
The Burmese authorities should release
immediately Ms Daw Aung San Suu Kyi and her party officials, refrain from any
action that would flare further tensions and cooperate fully and constructively
with the UNSG Special Representative, Mr Razali. They
should also engage immediately in a dialogue with all political forces in the
country, with a view to restoring democracy, respect of human rights and the
rule of law.

Javier
SOLANA,
EU
High Representative for
the Common Foreign and Security Policy,
urges the release of Aug San Suu Kyi
Javier Solana condemned today the
detention of Aung San Suu Kyi by the military government of
"This repressive behaviour confirms
the regime's lack of interest in the return to democracy. It will most
certainly reinforce the European Union's resolve to stick to the current policy
of sanctions against the military regime.
I urge Aung San Suu Kyi’s immediate
release and the re-opening of the offices of the National League for Democracy
(NLD). Harassment and intimidation of political opponents are totally
inconsistent with the Government's earlier promises to move towards dialogue
with the opposition."
