NATIONAL CONVENTION

Gen. Than Shwe on Convention

Sept. 15: At a coordination meeting with State/Division LORCs, SLORC Chairman General Than Shwe noted that it was almost four years since the SLORC took over State responsibilities, and that this is a term for a normal government. The Tatmadaw would not hold on to power for long and would return it to the people at an appropriate time. The coordination meeting for convening a National Convention has been held, and preparatory measures for the Convention are being taken. In the meantime, internal and external organizations as well as above-ground and under-ground groups were creating difficulties, trying to exert pressure militarily and economically while instigating the national races. He called for precautionary measures and warned against being swayed by such attempts. (WPD 9/16)
