Myanmar Opposition Appeals High Crt On Lawsuit DismissalYANGON, Myanmar (AP)--Myanmar's democratic opposition has submitted an appeal of the supreme court's dismissal of a lawsuit it had filed against the country's ruling military government. The supreme court on Tuesday heard the special appeal submitted by the National League for Democracy against dismissal of the party's complaint that the government was taking illegal measures to destroy it, NLD vice chairman Tin Oo said Wednesday. There was no indication when the court might issue a decision on the appeal. The supreme court in October last year dismissed the case filed against Myanmar leaders, including military intelligence chief Lt. Gen. Khin Nyunt, for lack of sufficient evidence for legal proceedings. "The supreme court decision was based on the examination of selective witnesses. It was a summary disposal, so we have lodged a special appeal against the decision," Tin Oo said Wednesday when contacted by telephone. Opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi and executive members of her party went to the supreme court in downtown Yangon Tuesday for the hearing, which lasted nearly four hours, said Tin Oo. More than 200 members of the party waited for their leaders, chanting, at the entrance of the supreme court building. NLD chairman Aung Shwe last year lodged the complaint at the supreme court against Home Minister Col. Tin Hlaing and 27 other government officials for alleged illegal harassment of his party. The officials were accused of illegally rounding up hundreds of party members last year and detaining them until they resigned, part of a campaign of harassment that included closing branch offices. The court dismissed the complaint after a one-day hearing before its 11-member panel Sept. 30. Proceedings weren't open to the public. |
