in Myanmar held its meeting No 1/2003 at the Ministry of Health on Pyidaungsu

Kyaw Myint, Deputy Minister for Mines U Myint Thein, Deputy Minister for Health
Dr Mya Oo, departmental heads, members of the central committee, guests and
officials.
The minister delivered an address on the occasion, saying that iodine
deficiency, Vitamin A deficiency and iron deficiency mostly occur in food, and iodine
is an essential element for development of fetus and brain of children.
Iodine deficiency is a major factor to cause adverse effects on development of the
brain of children, but such deficiency can be prevented easily. Therefore,
member nations of the WHO and the FAO pledged to strive for total elimination of
iodine deficiency at the World Summit for Children (1990) and the
International Conference on Nutrition (1992).
In the implementation of the iodine deficiency elimination project, the most
effective way is consumption of iodized salt across the country, and it is a
tactic being used by most nations of the world since it is cost-effective and
good for the long-term interest. It is an advantage for Myanmar to possess
favourable geographical condition for producing salt for the entire people in the
nation. The Universal Salt Iodization (USI) is making significant progress in
launching campaign for producing and consuming only iodized salt in the entire
country over the decade. According to the index of iodized salt production
and consumption, and disposal of iodine through urine, it can be said that
virtual elimination of iodine deficiency disorders is within Myanmar's reach.
Then, Deputy Director-General of the Health Department Dr Hla Pe presented
matters on health care services; Managing Director of Myanma Salt and Marine
Chemicals Enterprise U Saw Win, on production and quality control of iodized
salt; and Director of the Health Department (Public Health) Dr San Shwe Win, on
