Kokang, Palaung, Lahu, Wa and Akha national race
groups from Mogaung, Mohnyin and Indawgyi regions in
Kachin State, Laukkai, Panghsan, Lonhtan and Namhsam
regions in Shan State (North), Narkaungmu, Monghsat
and Mongla regions in Shan State (East), Hoya/Beya
Region in Kayah State, Thaton and Bilin regions in Mon
State, Kya-in-Seikkyi and Papun regions in Kayin
State, Maungtaw Region (East) in Rakhine State, Matupi
Region in Chin State, Lashi/Lahe and Nanyun/Pansaung
regions in Sagaing Division, Dawei/Launglon and
Bokpyin regions in Taninthayi Division have arrived
here to take part in Maha Thingyan Festival and to
make study tours.

First, General Khin Nyunt cordially greeted the
cultural troupe members and presented gifts to them.
On behalf of the Secretary-1, Minister for Progress of
Border Areas and National Races and Development
Affairs Col Thein Nyunt delivered a speech. He said
the Secretary-1 hosted a dinner in honour of national
races from border areas who are here to take part in
Myanma Traditional Thingyan Festival. He said the Work
Committee for Development of Border Areas and National
Races has made arrangements for taking part in the
Thingyan festival for 11 years. The Union of Myanmar
is home to over 100 national races. They have lived in
the Union through thick and thin since time
immemorial. He said forging the Union Spirit and
national solidarity are very important for
perpetuation of the Union of Myanmar and enabling it
to stand tall among the world's nations. In the course
of history, when there was national unity, the entire
nation prospered and the country stood as the one
respected by others. The country was invaded by other
nation at a time when national solidarity weakened. It
was historical lessons that the country was under
servitude for over 100 years, he said. After regaining
the independence, there occurred racism and
ideological differences due to instigations of
imperialists. There was instability in the country for
over 40 years. As a result, border areas lagged behind
in development and situations often led to near
disintegration of the Union, he said. Patriotism and
nationalist spirit alone are not enough for
perpetuation of the State. He spoke of the need to
propagate national solidarity spirit and Union spirit.
All national races must accept that it is necessary
for the Union to stand as united and consolidated one
that can resist outside instigations.

Therefore, the Union will exist forever as long as
there is unity among the national races, he said. For
consolidating Union Spirit and national solidarity,
the government built national reconsolidation. Now
national armed groups returned to the legal fold and
peace was restored in the regions, he added. With
peace and stability in the areas, the government laid
emphasis on development of the border areas and
national races spending a large sum of money.
Nowadays, border areas have developed unprecedentedly.
National solidarity has been built firmly based on
mutual friendship and respect, understanding,
sincerity, forgiveness, trust and mutual help among
the national races, he added.

As priority was given to development of transport
sector, there were frequent contacts among the
national brethren and education, health and social
sectors among them improved. Better conditions for
exchange of customs and culture of the national races
have emerged, he said. Arrangements were made for the
national people to meet in the Thingyan festival with
the aims of strengthening friendly relations,
exchanging customs and culture and propagating Union
Spirit and national solidarity spirit. He urged them
to recount knowledge and experience they gained during
the excursion when they reached their respective
regions and to make efforts for strengthening national
solidarity and propagation of Union Spirit. In
conclusion, he also urged them to continue to make
efforts for perpetuation of the Union, strengthening
national solidarity and propagation of Union Spirit as
cultural ambassadors of the State.

Then, Secretary-1 General Khin Nyunt made a speech. He
said that arrangements have been made to enable the
national brethren residing in various parts of the
nation to meet at one place by enjoying the Myanma
Traditional Maha Thingyan Festival joyfully, adding
that the water festival is a traditional one which is
concerned with the entire national people of the
Union. Being the traditional festival of the Union, it
is concerned with all the national races in the Union.
Thus, arrangements have been made for enabling all the
national brethren to participate together in the water
festival, he pointed out. Due to poor transport in the
past, the national brethren residing in various parts
of the Union had to keep aloof and distant. Therefore,
in the time of the State Peace and Development
Council, priority is being given to improvement of
transport sector, and there has been better transport
even in border areas. As a result, there have been
more contacts among the national brethren. With better
transport, arrangements have been made to enable the
national races residing the length and breadth of the
nation to take part in the Myanma Traditional Maha
Thingyan Festival, he said. The national brethren in
Thingyan uniforms took part in the traditional water
festival. Under the uniforms, Kachin, Kayin, Kayah,
Palaung, Naga, Wa, Kokang, Mon, Rakhine and Shan could
not be distinguished from one another and they look
the same like brethren. All the national brethren have
been living on the same land and partaking water from
the same source. With this concept, the national races
need to forge the Union Spirit calling all the
national brethren to live in the Union through thick
and thin keeping eggs and nests intact. To forge Union
Spirit, arrangements have been made to enable all the
national races to meet at one place by enjoying the
water festival, he said and called on the national
races to make strenuous efforts for flourishing Union
Spirit among the national brethren in their regions as
the cultural ambassadors when they arrived back in
their regions. Then, on behalf of members of the
national race cultural troupes, Naga national race Ma
Thiri Chaw of Leshi region, Sagaing Division, spoke
words of thanks. Then, those present at the ceremony
were presented with Myanma traditional cultural
dances. Then, Secretary-1 General Khin Nyunt hosted a
