1. Tawa Sluice Gate inaugurated in Thanatpin Township
Farmers now enjoying benefits after the Government's
construction of dams and sluice gates nationwide
Yangon, 31 Dec - Secretary-1 of the State Peace and
Development Council General Khin Nyunt, left here this
morning by Tatmadaw aircraft and arrived at Tawa
Sluice Gate in Thanatpin Township, Bago Division.
The opening ceremony of Tawa Sluice Gate which was
constructed and undertaken by the Construction-6 of
the Irrigation Department, the Ministry of Agriculture
and Irrigation, was held at the pandal near the sluice
gate at 8.45 am today. Secretary-1 General Khin Nyunt
addressed the opening ceremony.
Secretary-1 delivered a speech. Firstly, on behalf of
the government, he said he was pleased to see that
local farmers enjoyed the benefits practically for the
government had built the sluice gates in the important
regions in order to upgrade the farmland in wetlands
on both sides of Bago-Sittaung canal to valuable ones.
According to the project to turn wetlands near
Bago-Sittaung canal into farmlands, Shankaing sluice
gate in Waw Township was inaugurated in 2001 and
Paingkyone sluice gate in Kawa Township in February
2002.
By opening of Tawa sluice gate in Thanatpin Township,
the government brought about the interest of farmers
in Bago Division with genuine goodwill. In reality the
farmers have now enjoyed the benefits one after
another.
He said efforts were made to enable the Union of
Myanmar to keep abreast with the nations of the world
and to become stronger national economic life relying
on own national force and on self-reliance basis for
development of the nation and its people. As a result,
social life of the people gradually improved. At this
time it is necessary to establish independent national
economic life free from influence of other nations.
Only when strong economic life can be established
utilizing own land and marine resources and own
national force, will the country be free from
influence of other nations. That is why the government
is implementing the objective to become an agro-based
national economic life relying on own land and marine
resources and own national force, he said. Upgrading
the agriculture sector is a nation-building task that
brings about not only food sufficiency and development
of national economic life but also raising the
socio-economic life of farmers, the majority of the
citizens.
Therefore, the government has laid down the systematic
plans and is implementing them in all sectors for
raising the development momentum in the agriculture
sector. He spoke on reclamation of cultivable
farmlands, cultivation of crops all the year round and
provision of high quality crops, modern cultivation
techniques and agricultural equipment and fulfillment
of local requirements. The government has been
implementing irrigating networks, river water pumping
projects and underground water tapping projects
nationwide and it is also building sluice gates in
wetlands and low-lying areas where there is an inflow
of salty water in accord with the local requirements.
Under the present government, altogether 141 dams and
facilities including the Tawa sluice gate have been
built at a cost of K 58,389.38 million and they had
irrigated 2.02 million acres of farmland. In Bago
Division, 33 dams including the present sluice gate
were built at a cost of K 19,093 million and they
benefited over 500,000 acres of farmlands. Altogether
11 dams including Zwebat sluice gate in Waw Township
and Shwehlay sluice gate in Kawa Township are under
construction in Bago Division. Shankaing sluice gate
in Waw Township benefits 25,000 acres of farmland,
Paingkyone sluice gate in Kawa Township 30,000 acres
of farmland and Tawa sluice gate 32,000 acres of
farmland totalling 87,000 acres of farmland. Zwebat
and Shwehlay sluice gates can benefit 25,000 acres and
30,000 acres of farmlands respectively. On completion
of all the sluice gates, 142,000 acres of land will
become valuable farmland in Bago-Sittaung canal
region. These are practical measures for farmers and
rural people.
Fields in the north of Bago-Sittaung canal are flooded
every year. Therefore the government dug the main
canal and built the main sluice gates at suitable
places. Feasible study is under way for construction
of Winkadat sluice gate in Waw Township, Kokko and
Kanpyo sluice gates in Thanatpin Township.
The sluice gate projects of the State are emerging one
after another and once wetlands have become cultivable
valuable farmlands. The sluice gates preventing salty
water and silt from flowing to the region. Farmers
will have a lot of benefits, for they can store fresh
water. At a time when the State is systematically
fulfilling the requirements of the respective regions
for development of agriculture sector, local farmers
are to effectively utilize these opportunities created
by the State, to strive for development of
agricultural works with might and main and to
cooperate with the government harmoniously after
accepting its correct leadership. The State is giving
encouragement to development of agriculture sector
which is the main economy of rural areas, livestock
breeding sector and other production.
In line with the guidance of Head of State Senior
General Than Shwe, the five rural area development
tasks have been carried out. In addition to the
development tasks for rural agriculture, livestock
breeding and economic sectors, arrangements are being
made for ensuring smooth transportation in rural
areas, supplying of safe drinking water and water for
agricultural use, and uplift of health, fitness and
education standards of rural people, he elaborated.
So, it is necessary for the people living in rural
areas to unitedly take part in the rural development
tasks being implemented by the State. With the
encouragement of the State, the systematic supervision
of local authorities and active participation of the
local people, it is sure that all rural areas will
develop soon, and the new, modern and developed nation
will emerge soon as desired by the public, he pointed
out.
At present, although the State has been making
endeavours for uplift of socio-economic life of the
people and the development of human resources, some
pessimists are downplaying these efforts. So, all are
to be aware of and keep away from those with negative
views. Under the correct guidance of the government,
all national people are to preserve the good tradition
of cooperating hand in hand with the Government and to
keep on striving for development of the State, the
national people with Union Spirit. In conclusion, he
urged all to collectively participate in working for
the development of agriculture sector and the region,
and to uplift the socio-economic life of local people
more and more. by using the farmlands reclaimed by the
Tawa sluice gate.
Then, Minister for Agriculture and Irrigation Maj-Gen
Nyunt Tin made a speech. He said it is known to all
that the agriculture sector is vital for development
of the country and it is being carried out all over
the country including the delta region, highlands and
coastal region. So, with a view to boosting the
production of crops as well as development of economic
and social sectors, agricultural infrastructures
suitable for weather and soil have been provided and
projects on sluice gates and reservoirs and river
water pumping projects are being implemented all over
the country.
Head of State Senior General Than Shwe himself has
made inspection tours to every nook and corner of the
country and made arrangements for implementation of
development infrastructures. The State has spent over
K 58,000 million on agriculture to facilitate over 2
million acres of land sector in a short period. In
this regard, already completed 33 irrigation
facilities in Bago Division are contributing to the
growing of multiple-cropping on over 530,000 acres of
land, he said. In the country, water supply tasks are
vital for development of socio-economy of the people
in the dry zone, and measures for preventing the flood
are necessary for the lower parts of the country. In
this region, fields along Bago-Sittaung canal were
flooded due to poor drainage system. So, to solve the
problem, the Tawa sluice gate is built. The sluice
gate with 33 6 ft x12 ft outlets has been built at the
lower part of the canal.
The sluice gate can prevent sea water from flowing and
store fresh water. So, local farmers can grow monsoon
paddy as well as seasonal crops in the cold season and
summer and they will have opportunities to boost
production Bago Division is a reliable one in
agriculture sector in lower Myanmar. Farmers can grow
paddy, beans and pulses, oil crops, industrial raw
materials such as cotton, sugarcane and jute as well
as other crops. So, careful observations have been
made to implement dams, diversion weirs and sluice
gate projects. He then spoke words of thanks to
officials in Bago Division and staff of the Irrigation
Department for their energetic participation in
building the sluice gate in a period of a year. He
wished local people to be prosperous, maintaining the
Tawa sluice gate for long-term use.
Then, Commander Maj-Gen Aung Min made a speech. He
said: the Bago Division plays a greater role in
national economy. Out of 14 states and divisions, the
division is the second greatest in terms of paddy
production and the third greatest in terms of pulses
and beans production. The areas of the division is
over 9.7 million acres and 3.1 million acres of land
is used as cultivable land. Efforts are being made to
increase more and more cultivable land in the
division. The newly-opened Tawa sluice gate will
prevent 32,000 acres of farmland from being inundated.
It will also prevent sea water and retain fresh water,
thus further contributing to growing more paddy and
other crops. At the same time, there will be an
increase in income and living standard of farmers will
also improve.
The commander, on behalf of the farmers and local
people, thanked the Head of State and the Ministry of
Agriculture and Irrigation for successful
implementation of the sluice gate which will
contribute much towards the agricultural sector.
