(1) Secretary-1 inspects building of Mayanzweba
Embankment and regional development
YANGON, 2 Feb-Secretary-l of the State Peace and
Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt inspected
building of Mayanzweba Embankment in Kyauktan Township
and preparations for breeding sea prawn with advanced
methods.
Accompanied by member of the State Peace and
Development Council Chairman of Yangon Division Peace
and Development Council Commander of Yangon Command
Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than, the ministers, the deputy
ministers, Chief of Staff (Air), officials of the State
Peace and Development Council Office, heads of
department and officials, he left here by helicopter
this morning.
On arrival at Shan-chaung village in Kyauktan Township,
the Secretary- 1 and party were welcomed by
departmental heads, members of Division, District,
Township and Village Peace and Development Councils,
departmental personnel, members of Union Solidarity and
Development Association and local people. Deputy
Minister for Agriculture and Irrigation U Ohn Myint and
Director of Irrigation Department U Tin Maung Win
briefed the Secretary- 1 on formation of new land up
from one to two miles between the present embankment
and the coastal baseline, building of dykes by local
farmers in reclaiming 4,000 acres of cultivated land on
the upturned land, conducting survey in September 1999
to build an embankment to reclaim 12,000 acres of land
and making efforts for completion of 23.4 miles long
and 12 feet high dyke within two years and Yangon
Division Officer of Settlements and Land Records
Department U Naing Lin and Division Manager of Myanmar
Agriculture Services U San Mang on current sown
acreage, formation of new far ms after completion of
Mayanzweba Embankment and preparations being made to
cultivate crops including paddy on the naturally formed
land.
Commander Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than explained plans to
allot land to local farmers which will emerge after
completion of Mayanzweba Embankment.
The Secretary-l spoke of the need to give priority to
those who do not own farms in allotting reclaimed land,
to open an agricultural education station in
Shan-chaung village and to make efforts for completion
of Mayanzweba Embankment in time, looking into the
requirements on regional progress under Streaking
including education and health.
At his meeting with local people, the Secretary-l said
local farmers are doing their business with zeal and
sincerity in the southern sector of Kyauktan Township
which is a paddy cultivation region. Embankments are
being built to prevent naturally upturned land from
flooding with sea water in the coastal areas for the
benefit of farmers. As new land upsurge between the
existing dykes and the sea front, a new embankment is
being built as a shield against sea water.
National entrepreneurs are being permitted to reclaim
large stretches of land in the inland regions of the
nation as the tasks need much capital and heavy
equipment.
The government is building an embankment in the region
to give protection to the naturally formed land. The
newly upturned land will be allotted to local people
who do not own farms. Most of the remote regions of
Kyauktan Township had become accessible as new roads
are being built in the area.
When the new embankment is completed a motor way will
be built on the existing dyke to become a coastal road
benefiting the region. As the government will grant
land to farmers, they will gain benefits depending on
their perseverance.
The government is giving encouragement to the task
ensuring regional progress and improvement of social
lives of thc people as the nation will become rich only
when the people are prosperous. It is also giving
priority to national progress as it will lead to
flourishing of the spirit of solidarity and Union
Spirit. At Yedwingon village, the Secretary-1 and
party inspected building of Mayanzweba Embankment. At
the briefing hall, an official of Irrigation Department
reported to the Secretary-l on progress in building the
embankment.
Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt met with local people and urged them
to cultivate paddy and other crops which are suitable
to the climate and soil of the region. He also met
education staff there.
At Zwebakondan village in the township, the secretary-1
and party heard a report on monsoon paddy cultivation
and produce, cultivation of cold season crops, kinds of
crops cultivated in the region, building of the
360-foot Zwebakondan Bridge and the 220-foot Khanaung
Bridge, paving of Kadapa-Khanaung-Karnakalok-Pandaw
Road and building of roads and bridges in the township
presented by officials.
In coordination with officials, the Secretary- 1 looked
into the requirements presented by local people
concerning education, health, extension of the village,
installation of phones and regional security.
Commander Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than said Kyauktan is the
main agricultural region in Yangon Division. The
region which grows paddy most is properly prospering
under the management of the State. The region won
second prize in sunflower cultivation in the entire
nation presented by World Food Organization last year.
Efforts are required to maintain the success of the
township. As the government is rendering assistance
for the progress of agricultural and transport sectors,
the entire people should strive with utmost efforts
from the respective sectors for national progress.
Secretary-l Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt said they came to build
infrastructure needed to develop southern and eastern
sectors of Kyauktan Township. Building of economic
infrastructures by the government and the harmonious
efforts by the people will benefit the region as well
as the nation.
An embankment is being built with the manpower and
machine power to cultivate crops on land outside the
existing dyke. Large sums of money have been spent in
building roads and bridges in the coastal region of
Kyauktan Township, which is relying mainly on the water
transport as the region is crisscrossed by many
streams.
Roads are being built with the aim of uplifting
regional economy and the living standards of the
people; and extra impetus is being given to developing
the education, health and agriculture sectors.
As the government is dutiful on its part, the nation
will develop if all the people of villages and towns
also work hard. The entire people should strive in
accord with the rules and regulations for the
development of regional agriculture for benefit of the
nation and of their own. Afterwards, the Secretary- 1
met with education staff. At a sea water prawn
breeding station near Mipya village, which is a joint
venture between CP Group and Shweayeya, the Secretary-l
and party heard a report on sea prawn farming with thc
use of advanced methods. They then inspected the prawn
breeding ponds. They arrived back here in the evening.
