Modern developed nation can be built up through might

Staff (Navy), deputy ministers, officials of the State
Peace and Development Council Office, departmental

Nyaungdon Township, Ayeyawady Division.
They were welcomed there by Chairman of Ayeyawady
Division Peace and Development Council Commander of
South-West Command Maj-Gen Htay Oo and officials. The
Secretary-1 and party proceeded to Maubin.
Then, Chairman of Myanmar Education Committee
Secretary-1 General Khin Nyunt addressed the opening
of the Government Technological College (Maubin)
constructed by the Ministry of Science and Technology
for human resource development near Maubin-Yayle Road
in Maubin.
National race students formally unveiled the signboard
of the college. Then, students Maung Min Nyi Nyi Mon
and Ma Yin Mon Htwe Lwin cut the ribbon to open the
main building of the college.
To mark the successful opening of the college, the
Secretary-1 planted a sapling of Gangaw (Mesua Ferrea)
in front of the main building. Then, Lt-Gen Khin Maung
Than, Commander Maj-Gen Htay Oo and Minister for
Science and Technology U Thaung planted a sapling
each.
The Secretary-1 formally unveiled the bronze plaque of
the college and sprinkled scented water on it.
The opening ceremony followed on the first floor of
the main building. At the ceremony, the Secretary-1
delivered an address, saying that the government has
been making efforts in all spheres with the concept
that only when there emerge basic foundations -
prevalence of peace in the nation, strong national
economic life and improvement of the living standard
of the people - will the nation stand tall among the
world's nations.
In the process, it is needed to ensure collective
participation of the entire people equipped with
nationalistic spirit in nation-building tasks. This
being so, the people need to make strenuous efforts
for the development of their regions as well as that
of agriculture, livestock breeding and manufacturing
sectors, he said.
The Secretary-1 stressed the need for the entire
people to strive with might and main for regional and
national development, and for regional and national
economic progress to enable the nation to keep abreast
with the development of the world's nations. A modern
developed nation can be built up through the might of
technicians and science and technological experts. In
other words, it is needed to constantly produce highly
qualified human resources.
The government is laying emphasis on uplift of
education standard, health and fitness, socio-economy
and economic life of the people region-wise with a
view to enabling the entire people to possess
capability and morale to build and defend the nation.
Particularly, in conformity with the needs of
respective regions, the government has been making
efforts for emergence of good foundations, development
of human resources, ensuring full health care services
for regional people and smooth transport in all parts
of the nation.
In doing so, for ensuring equitable development and
narrowing the development gap of all parts of the
nation, the government is implementing development
projects after designating 24 special development
regions based on 14 States and Divisions.
He said in Ayeyawady Division, Maubin was designated
as a development special region and an arts and
science university, a government technological college
and a government computer college and a 200-bed
hospital are being built in accord with the
characteristics of a special region.
He said Maubin government technological collage was
opened today. He added that the college would produce
engineers who would bring about development of Maubin
region and Ayeyawady Division in the near future.
Opening of such a college means providing an
opportunity for students to pursue higher leaning in
Maubin region and Ayeyawady Division and emergence of
better foundations for producing highly-qualified
human resources in the division, he added.
He said now is a technological age in which science
and technology dominate all development sectors.
Therefore, establishment of national forces capable of
bringing about the development of the people and the
nation is a very important national requirement.
That is why, he said, the State Peace and Development
Council created the Ministry of Science and Technology
for development of science and technology to keep up
with the time. In 1988 there were only one
technological university, one university of computer
studies and 10 technical institutes. There are now
four technological universities, two universities of
computer studies and 25 government technological
colleges including the present one. Moreover,
technological universities only conferred master's
degrees on graduates and produced 22 master's degree
holders in 1988.
Subject-wise master's degree courses and doctorate
courses were conducted with the aim of uplifting
education to international level. Altogether 355
master's degree graduates and 13 PhD graduates were
produced in 2000-2001 academic year, 477 master
graduates and 44 PhD holders in 2001-2002 and 592
master's graduates and 71 PhD holders in 2002-2003, he
said. Under the present government, 128 PhD holders
were produced, he said.
As tasks on emergence of highly-qualified human
resources in technological sector and nurturing
region-wise human resources are being implemented
harmoniously, efficient engineers have emerged in the
regions of the Union. They now have opportunity to
continue their studies on advanced degrees and PhD, he
said.
At a time when better foundations have been created in
science and technology sector due to the government's
ambitious programmes, students learning at
technological universities and government
technological colleges are to try to become brilliant
engineers and computer scientists on whom the State
can rely, he said.
He urged faculty members to nurture the students to
become outstanding engineers and computer scientists
and inculcate in them the will to strive for regional
and national development and the Union Spirit.
He spoke of the need for faculty members to train the
students to realize the national essence of building
universities and colleges in regions of the Union and
to grasp educational opportunity practically and to
serve regional and national interest.
The Secretary-1 urged the students to try to become
highly-qualified human resources and intellectuals and
intelligentsia who would serve the interest of the
State and to learn their lessons hard.
In conclusion, he called on faculty members and the
students to make efforts for turning out outstanding
