1. Secretary-1 hosts dinner in honour of those who
   participated in SARS prevention

Departments, social organizations and entire people
are to continue SARS prevention with constant
awareness

Yangon, 21 June - Chairman of the National Health
Committee Secretary-1 of the State Peace and
Development Council General Khin Nyunt hosted a dinner
in honour of those who took part in the tasks for
prevention of SARS at the meeting hall of the
Institute of Nursing on Bogyoke Aung San Street this
evening.

The Secretary-1 delivered an address on the occasion.
In his address, he said that Severe Acute Respiratory
Syndrome (SARS) broke out in Asia and Southeast Asia
and then spread to some parts of the world. So the
people of the world nations are urgently taking
preventive measures against SARS from entering their
countries. When the deadly disease has spread around
the world Myanmar had been able to take preventative
measures against the spread of SARS from other
countries. For this Myanmar should take pride.

The Government today honoured health personnel,
departmental officials of the ministries, members of
social organizations and the people who are making
concerted and collective efforts in preventing the
spread of SARS from other countries.

There was no knowledge of the source of SARS and how
it spread, and there has been no medicine for the
deadly disease. Meanwhile the highly-infectious
disease has caused serious deaths in a short period of
time. This being so, WHO had been in a position to
announce SARS as a catastrophic disease.

SARS spread from some Asian countries to about 30
nations of the world in a short time. As mortality
rate and morbidity rate of SARS are high the
disastrous consequences-closing of schools, decline in
economy, trade and social sectors, and halt in
business including tourist arrivals followed.

Therefore, the nations of the world had to face with
health problems and suffered great loss in economic
and social sectors.

WHO has announced SARS as a catastrophic disease four
times and released SARS warnings of travelling on a
timely basis starting 15 March 2003. Moreover, WHO has
established the information network with
dermatologists, physicians and pathologists around the
world and did research on the disease. It also made
studies on the disease and provided necessary
assistance to the nations that have been struck by the
disease. WHO is taking systematic measures in the
fight against SARS.

Although there has been no incidence of SARS in
Myanmar the nations which were struck by the disease
are sharing borders with Myanmar and dealing with her.
In addition, since the disease is highly infectious
and causing deaths in a short time, preventive
measures are being taken against the disease in
advance.

In preventing SARS, Myanmar is making arrangements and
taking measures against the spread of SARS with the
announcement of WHO on SARS for the first time.

Systematic steps are being taken after laying down
plans at the 37th Meeting of the National Health
Committee held on 1 April 2003. The Myanmar National
Health Committee has formed the SARS Prevention and
Control Leading Committee led by the Minister for
Health, the work committee and the sub-committees led
by the Deputy Minister for Health after laying down a
national level project against SARS and work was well
under way.

In implementing the project, concerted and collective
efforts have been made as a national duty after
forming the integrated teams that included those from
the Ministry of Health and the related ministries,
those from cooperative and private sectors and members
of social organizations.

In taking measures against the spread of SARS from
other countries, surveillance tasks were being carried
out at the international airports and ports as well as
the border crossings. At the same time, educative
talks were given to and courses and seminar were
conducted for those who are discharging duties at the
international gateways and border crossings.
Surveillance tasks were also assigned to railway
stations, hotels and guest houses as well as to those
at the government hospitals, private hospitals and
clinics.
Systematic measures have been taken to place the
Webagi Infectious Hospital of Yangon and Kandawnadi
Hospital of Mandalay as Quarantine Units for those who
came from SARS-hit countries.

In addition, purchase of modern medical equipment to
control SARS and medicines, distribution of them to
hospitals and upgrading of laboratories had been
carried out.

Moreover, discussions on SARS were held among Myanmar
Maternal and Child Welfare Association, Myanmar Red
Cross Society, Myanmar Academy of Medical Science,
Myanmar Medical Association and Myanmar Dental
Association, social organizations and private
surgeons.

Donations of medicines and medical equipment for
control SARS by Myanmar entrepreneurs, scholars and
Myanmar staff abroad through Myanmar embassies could
be made and the donations amounted to over K 31.2
million.

In taking measures for imparting knowledge on SARS to
the public, the characteristics and signs of SARS and
preventive measures were successfully informed to the
people with use of media.

With the active participation of the people, the
objectives to control the spread of SARS have been
fully implemented.

He said the Union of Myanmar systematically undertook
preventive measures for SARS with the might of
national forces within the country. He said Myanmar
has been cooperating with UN agencies including WHO
and international community including ASEAN members.

He said Head of State Senior General Than Shwe himself
attended Special ASEAN Leaders' Meeting of SARS and
ASEAN-China Leaders' Meeting on SARS held in Thailand
in April 2003.

According to the joint communiqué and statement,
Myanmar systematically carried out the tasks to be
continued, he said.

Myanmar attended international meetings such as ASEAN
Health Ministers' Meeting on SARS and senior officials
meeting held in Malaysia, ASEAN +3 Meeting on Aviation
held in the Philippines and ASEAN+3 senior officials
meeting on combating SARS held in the People's
Republic of China and it actively participated in
combating SARS.

He said it is encouraging to note that there is no
patient with SARS in Myanmar due to cooperation with
international communities, government departments,
private and cooperative sectors, social organizations
and national people and efforts as national movement.

He said the government honoured those who participated
in serving national duty on prevention against SARS.

According to the announcements of the respective
nations, it is learnt that the spread of SARS in
world's countries including Asian nations where the
disease occurred, could be controlled to some extent.
However, there is still outbreak and spread of the
disease.

And according to the statements made by some experts,
the disease could occur again. There is still danger
of the disease. Origin of disease, treatment,
epidemic, therapy and medicines are under study.

The Secretary-1 called on respective departments,
social organizations and the entire people to continue
prevention of SARS with constant awareness.

He said continued efforts are to be made to prevent
the spread of the disease in Myanmar, accelerating the
cooperation of departments, social organizations and
the people.

In conclusion, the Secretary-1 thanked and honoured
the governmental staff, members of social
organizations and the people for their participation
in the national tasks for prevention against the
disease.

He said that on behalf of the government and Myanmar
citizens or as the National Health Committee, he also
thanked the WHO, NGOs and wellwishers at home and
abroad who provided technologies and cash and kind to
Myanmar.

Then, the Secretary-1 enjoyed the dinner together with
those who participated in the tasks.
