(2) Strenuous efforts being made to develop whole
nation in interest of posterity Every sector requires
success as nation is now in position to raise itself
one more level higher

Yangon, 12 June - State Peace and Development Council
Chairman Defence Services Commander-in-Chief Senior
General Than Shwe, left here for Ayeyawady Division in
a motorcade on 5 June afternoon.

On arriving at the Bo Myat Tun Bridge spanning
Ayeyawady River in Nyaungdon Township in Ayeyawady
Division at 2 pm, Senior General Than Shwe and party
were welcomed there by Ayeyawady Division Peace and
Development Council Chairman South-West Command
Commander Maj-Gen Htay Oo and officials.

All along the way, Senior General Than Shwe and party
inspected regional development conditions and tasks
being carried out for better transport of Ayeya-wady
Division. In the evening, the Senior General and party
arrived at Pathein. Senior General Than Shwe and party
were welcomed there by Deputy Commander Brig-Gen Tint
Swe, senior military officers, and division-level
departmental officials.

Senior General Than Shwe and party left Pathein in a
motorcade at 9.30 am on 6 June and inspected the
condition of Pathein-Kangyidaunt-Daka-Yekyi Road, and
preparatory work for the rainy season cultivation
being carried out along the road.

Senior General Than Shwe and party stopped over in
Yekyi, where they met with the welcoming party made up
of Pathein District Peace and Development Council
Chairman Lt-Col Hla Thwin, authorities of Yekyi
Township, and officials.

On departure from Yekyi, Senior General Than Shwe and
party looked into Yekyi-Kyonpyaw-Hinthada Road and
conditions of regional development.

Senior General Than Shwe and party also stopped over
in Hinthada and met with local authorities and
departmental officials.

Travelling along
Hinthada-Zalun-Danubyu-Nyaungdon-Pantanaw-Kyaunggon-Kangyidaunt-Pathein
Road in a motorcade, Senior General Than Shwe and
party arrived back at Pathein in the evening.

At the meeting hall of the Ayeyawady Division Peace
and Development Council Office in Pathein, Senior
General Than Shwe met with local authorities and
division-level departmental personnel, and gave
guidance to them.

Senior General Than Shwe said of all the states and
divisions of Myanmar, Ayeyawady Division is the most
reliable region for the nation. Both the agricultural
and livestock breeding sectors are achieving success.
It is also producing over 25 per cent of the nation's
gross rice output.

The division has potentials for agricultural
production as it possesses the most fertile soil in
the nation. Moreover, as it has a large number of
natural lakes and is contigious to the sea, the
division has good foundations to raise fresh water and
sea fish and prawns.

Ayeyawady Division is playing a vital role in the
national economy as the nation is trying to develop
her economy based on agriculture and livestock
breeding. It is important to fully utilize the rich
natural resources of the division to contribute more
towards the national economic development. If paddy
per acre yield can be increased significantly by
utilizing the ideal conditions of the division, the
paddy production will increase to 1.2 billion baskets
from over 1 billion baskets at present.

Thus, it is required to raise the production of the
agriculture. The targets have been set to raise the
per acre yield of each crop of the nation's ten major
crops. Efforts will have to be made to yield 100
baskets of paddy per acre, 400 viss of long staple
cotton, 30 tons of sugarcane, 20 baskets of gram, 20
baskets of pedisein, 25 baskets of pigeon pea, 50
baskets of groundnut, 20 baskets of sesame, 50 baskets
of sunflower, and 80 baskets of maize. Priority should
be given to raising per acre yield of each crop if
eight of the ten crops are grown in the division.
Officials and local authorities will have to organize
and educate farmers to effectively use the four
methods of increasing per acre yield. The four methods
are: to apply correct techniques, to use quality
strains, to use chemical and natural fertilizers, and
to extend sown acreage. The government is rendering
assistance to apply the methods. If the methods can be
effectively introduced in Ayeyawady Division, which
has ideal soil and water resources, the agricultural
sector of the division will advance one stage with
rapid acceleration.

In the past, there was a presumption that Ayeyawady
Division did not need dams or river water pumping
stations. But the government has built dams and water
pumping stations at possible places, and is building
more. Roads and bridges are being built one after
another to boost production and to conveniently
transport the goods to markets. Utilizing the better
conditions, the division will have to strive to
develop agriculture and livestock breeding with
greater momentum.

Strenuous efforts are being made to develop the whole
nation including the division in the interest of the
posterity. In the past, it took 18 hours to travel
from Yangon to Pathein by boat, and the journey was
hazardous during monsoon. Now, Pathein is only three
hours drive from Yangon. Other townships in the
division are also enjoying the fruits of smooth and
secure transport. In all other states and divisions
too, the necessary infrastructures for economic
development including roads, bridges and dams are
being built. Depending on the regional situation,
factories, hospitals, universities and colleges are
being built the length and breadth of the nation. The
endeavours are being made with the aim of raising the
living standard of the people. All will have to make
efforts for achieving success in every sector, as the
nation is now in a position to raise itself one more
level higher.

Next, Commander Maj-Gen Htay Oo reported on conditions
of peace and tranquillity prevailing in the region,
undertakings for further development of the
agricultural sector and the meat and fish sector, the
construction of roads and bridges, increased visits of
local and foreign guests to Chaungtha and Ngwehsaung
beaches, and efforts to exceed the targets set by the
State. In the like manner, ministers from respective
ministries also reported on tasks being undertaken by
their ministries in Ayeyawady Division.

First and foremost, Minister for Agriculture and
Irrigation Maj-Gen Nyunt Tin reported that of ten
major crops of the State to the exclusion of cotton
and sugarcane, the rest crops are grown on a
commercial scale in Ayeyawady Division. Efforts are
being made to boost the paddy output by designating
special zones in 18 townships in Ayeyawady Division.
Moreover, Ayeyawady Division is reliable for the
cultivation of jute, an industrial raw material. The
Ministry of Agriculture & Irrigation is inventing
jute-peeling machines for jute growers. Beyond that, a
paper factory is being constructed in Maubin to
produce paper with the use of jute. Systematic steps
are being taken for development of the agriculture
sector of Ayeyawady Division.

Then, Minister for National Planning and Economic
Development U Soe Tha reported on implementation of
the development projects of the State by laying down
short-term plans, condition of achievements, and
favourable prospects that will speed up the
development momentum in the economy of the State.

Minister for Construction Maj-Gen Saw Tun also
presented reports on conditions of constructing roads
and bridges in respective regions so as to speed up
the development of the State, conditions of 38 bridges
and 2 bridges and roads under construction.

Minister for Livestock and Fisheries Brig-Gen Maung
Maung Thein also reported that as rice grows well in
Ayeyawady Division, it can be called the rice bowl of
the State. Moreover, momentum has been gained in the
meat and fish sector. It can also be seen fresh and
sea water fish and prawn breeding industries thriving
in the division. Furthermore, Ayeyawady Division is a
region where chicken and ducks are bred most.
Therefore, the ministry will render assistance to
fisheries as well as to livestock breeding industries.

Minister for Communications, Posts and Telegraphs
Brig-Gen Thein Zaw then reported on extended work for
better communication, installation of telephone lines
in 18 villages, and arrangements for installation of
telephone lines in another 16 villages.

Minister for Health Dr Kyaw Myint also reported on
health assistance being provided by the ministry for
longevity of life for everyone, and efforts that have
made the country a polio- and leprosy-free once.

In his concluding address, the Senior General said the
ministers had explained the sector-wise tasks for
development of the division. The tasks are heading
towards national development. Local authorities will
have to make collective efforts with conviction for
regional development. The nation will develop only if
there is harmonious relationship between the central
and regional bodies.

The discussions should not be ended in the meeting
hall, they should be practically realized till the
success is achieved. The government is setting up
industries regionwise for industrial development. In
other words, the government is combining the resources
of the agricultural sector and industrial sector for
regional development. Myanmar will have to work two or
three times harder to catch up with the nations lying
in the surrounding areas of Myanmar. The government
has been implementing projects for full development of
all the regions and states and divisions. There will
be a proportionate development in all the developed,
developing and less developed regions of the Union, if
the project can be effectively implemented. In
addition, all will have to work hard for development
and perpetuation of the Union. After the meeting, the
Senior General inspected Pathein and its surrounding
areas.
