2. NLD led by Daw Suu Kyi commits acts counter
to democracy
YANGON, 30 May - Daw Aung San Suu Kyi and her
followers of the National League for Democracy
including U Tin Oo, numbering more than 100, travelled
to Monywa from Mandalay on 29 May morning in a convoy
of seven cars and 20 motorcycles. When they reached
Sagaing, more NLD members joined them. From Sagaing,
they continued their journey in 14 cars and 20
motorcycles and arrived at ChaungU. From the town they
went on to Monywa with a strength of about 150
persons, riding 16 cars and 70 motorcycles. Daw Suu
Kyi's original team had a strength of 18 persons
travelling in three cars. The others were said to be
her attendants and security personnel.
On arrival at Ye-bo-san village in ChaungU Township,
those who opposed Daw Suu Kyi staged a peaceful
demonstration on both sides of the road. Although the
local people were staging a peaceful demonstration,
the followers of Daw Suu Kyi who accompanied her
hurled stones at the crowd. Two local people were hit
and injured by the stones. Moreover, while travelling
to Monywa, Daw Suu Kyi's NLD followers rode 100
motorcycles violating the traffic rules and blocking
the public highway, thereby, causing accidents and
disturbing the passengers.
As the number of vehicles had risen to 16 cars and
about 150 motorcycles in entering Monywa, the
townspeople were overwhelmed by excitement and fear. A
person watching the scene and taking photographs with
interest received head injuries as he was hit by a
pack of NLD members of the convoy. He was later known
as Maung Myo Myint, a cameraman, of Monywa. The
townspeople went to the local police station and filed
a complaint against the NLD members for their attack
on the cameraman and their act to disturb peace and
stability.
At about 6 pm the same day, the group led by Daw Suu
Kyi arrived at the entrance to Monywa. The group
together with other NLD members, who were waiting for
it at the entrance gate, drove round Monywa for three
hours in a convoy flanked by motorcycles. The convoy
of Daw Suu Kyi comprising 16 cars flanked by about 150
motorcycles plus the NLD members who joined the group
in Mandalay, Sagaing, Myinmu and ChaungU moved in
procession in town. This caused traffic blocks,
disorder and public apprehension.
The government officials notified the NLD through U
Lwin of the party, saying that it should avoid acts
that might cause public alarm and should have
understanding and show magnanimity towards the people
in planning organizational trips to townships.

3. Daw Aung San Suu Kyi of NLD and party did carry
out undemocratic activities in the past
YANGON, 30 May - Political parties are required to
carry out organization work with understanding towards
the people at the time of transition to democracy.
When Daw Aung San Suu Kyi of the National League for
Democracy and her followers went on an organisational
tour of Sagaing Division, Kachin State and Mandalay
Division for the reorganization of the party the mass
of people who were opposed to her staged peaceful
protests. As regards the incident, NLD alleged that
its convoy was halted and disturbed with the use of
force. But actually, it is learnt that the youths of
the convoy started the violence and caused the
injuries to the people.
At about 9 pm on 10-5-2003, when the NLD's convoy
arrived at Indaw, about 70 people on the right side of
the road peacefully held the signboards bearing the
words that they do not support Daw Suu Kyi. At that
time about 200 supporters welcoming the convoy made
abusive words at the people. The two groups exchanged
abusive words on each other. As about 70 people who
opposed NLD left the scene, NLD members made abusive
languages and threw stones at them, injuring five. The
injured were Htay Lwin (a) Bo Lwin (four stitches in
the head) of Myitsay Village, Taung-thagon
Village-tract, Banmauk Township; Thein Nu (bruises in
the back and internal injury) of Khamo Village,
Banmauk Township; Than Oo (swelling eye and open
injury) of Mwuttheim Village, Banmauk Township; Soe
Myint Oo (internal injury to the chest and right leg)
of Nabar Village, Indaw Township; and Zaw Lwin Oo
(internal injury to left collar bone) of Gaungkaik
Village, Banmauk Township.
At about 8 pm on 25-5-2003, when NLD's convoy arrived
at Nweyon Village in Madaya Township, NLD members of
the convoy and the supporters welcoming them threw
stones and catapulted at a vehicle carrying those
opposed to Daw Suu Kyi, injuring three. They were Kyaw
Naing (open wound to skull and three stitches) of
Wayongon Village in Singu Township; San Oo (oral
injury with three stitches on upper gum and four on
lower gum) of Shaukpinyo Village, Singu Township; and
Pho Toke (open injury to right cheek) of Shaukpinyo
Village, Singu Township.
At about 5 pm on 26-5-2003, a motorcycle from the
NLD's convoy ran over Ma Myat Thin Thu aged 21 at
Patheinlay Village in Patheingyi Township, causing
injury to her leg. Meanwhile, some NLD members led by
vice-chairman of Madaya Township NLD got out of the
car and struck the signboards held by those opposing
NLD with cudgels and fisted them. During the violence
five NLD members attacked Ma Aye Aye Khine aged 24 of
Patheinlay Village, causing internal injury to her.
With regard to the incidents, both NLD members and
local people filed the law suits against each other to
the police stations concerned. The local authorities
said that they did not object to peaceful
demonstration of both local people and NLD members and
to peaceful activities of Daw Suu Kyi and her
supporters. But the authorities called on NLD members
to avoid such violence causing injuries to the people.
