Thein Myint.
On behalf of the wellwishers, Secretary of SBT U Soe
Tint presented K 7.5 million to Headmaster U Thein
Myint.
Next, the Secretary-1 delivered an address. In his
address, the Secretary-1 said Hsinbyukyun region has
been in existence since Bagan Period. When King
Alaungsithu with his flanking manoeuvre marched to
Kyar-in (now Kyapin) town, his royal elephant crouched
on a sand dune of River Ayeyawady and the dune was
thus called Hsinbyukyun (white elephant island).
Hsinbyukyun located on the west bank of the Ayeyawady
river is a strategic region, and thus during the
Second Anglo-Myanmar War, Maha Bandoola took base in
the region and recruited his men since the local
people had strong patriotism.
When Myanmar was under the servitude of the
colonialists, there emerged many patriots as well as
artistes in the region. Therefore, the local people
should take pride in the region for its participation
in history. One of the literati emerged in the region
is doyen writer Sayagyi Sinbyukyun Aung Thein. He is
serving the interest of the State through literature
so far. During the colonial period, the dwellers of
Hsinbyukyun with ardent nationalism set up a national
middle school bravely amidst the difficulties caused
by the colonialists. It is a good tradition of
Hsinbyukyun region in possessing a long history and
strong patriotism. Myanmar fell under colonial rule
for over 100 years and the nation had suffered various
kinds of hardships encountering bitter experiences.
Hence, Myanmar in no way can fall under servitude. The
colonialists exploited natural resources of the
country for over 100 years. Yet it had built only one
river crossing major bridge named Sagaing Bridge. No
dam and reservoir was built by them. Myanmars had to
become the poor possessing no farmland. They had to
cultivate crops at the lands owned by the Chettias who
were brought in by the colonialists. Nowadays, the
Government has been making efforts for the people not
to have the tendency of relying on external elements.
To enable the nation and the people to stand tall
among the world's nations, the Government has been
making efforts for the emergence of a modern nation
with the concept that the strength of the nation lies
within. Nowadays, the 30-year national education
promotion long-term plan has been under way. In fact,
it envisaged the emergence of the education system of
international standard. Due to the active
participation of the people, the plan is achieving
success to a certain extent. Although the plan has
been targeted for 30 years, it can be completed sooner
if teachers and students make earnest efforts. A
nation which can keep abreast with the world's nations
can be built up safely and freely only through the
might of the intellectuals and intelligentsia who are
citizens of our country. Our students are originally
sharp and clever and they will surely become
outstanding ones by most effectively using the
multimedia teaching and learning aids facilitated at
schools. The Secretary-1 also urged teachers, students
and parents to make collective efforts for development
of human resources needed in building up a new modern
nation.
After the ceremony, the Secretary-1 and party posed
for a documentary photo together with members of the
Board of Trustees, teachers and students of the
school.

District and Township Peace and Development Councils,
departmental personnel and members of USDA. Then, the
Secretary-1 and party inspected the newly completed
runway and the apron and construction of the airport
building. At the briefing hall, Minister for Transport
Maj-Gen Hla Myint Swe and the managing director of
Asia World Co Ltd reported to the Secretary-1 on
salient points of the project, completion of the
runway up to 8,500 feet in length and 100 feet in
breadth out of the targeted 12,000 feet in length and

Secretary-1 and party arrived at the three story
building, where they were welcomed by the rector,
professors and faculty members. Afterwards, the
Secretary-1 and party inspected the library, lecture
hall and meeting room.
Next, the Secretary-1 and party proceeded to old city
of Beikthano. They were In 101st Sasana Era, King
Duttabaung established Sri Khestra and he was
contemporary with King Kalathawka (4th century BC) of
Majjima Region who was the sponsor of Second Buddhist
Synod. It shows that Beikthano which is contemporary
with Sri Khestra had been in existence in the 4th
century BC. According to religious records, Lord
Buddha visited Thuwunnabhumi in his eighth year of
Buddhahood and Minbu Kyaungdawya in his 21st year of
Buddhahood. On the 49th day after attaining
enlightenment, Lord Buddha gave away hair relics to
merchant brothers of Taphutha and Balika who conveyed
them to Myanmar and enshrined them in Shwedagon
pagoda. It stands witness that Theravada Buddhism was
flourishing at that time. In the year 442 BC, King
Duttabaung was reigning Sri Khestra. Beikthano was
contemporary with Sri Khestra in 4th century BC. The
excavated items and findings in Beikthano show that
the city had possessed high standard of civilization
and culture. At that time, Pyu civilization had been
flourishing in our country. It was mentioned in Manshu
treatises and Tan dynasty's historical records that a
Pyu cultural group visited China at that time. The
cultural group members were recorded as wearing bright
clothes and they played musical instruments of bronze,
leather, string and air. It shows that Pyu
civilization had been of high standard at that time.
The old city of Beikthano possessed high standard of
culture and civilization and Buddhism flourished
there. In addition, there were dams and reservoirs for
irrigating farmlands. Historical records show that
Beikthano had been in existence with high standard of
civilization since 4th century BC and Buddhism was
flourishing there.
Next, Deputy Director of Archaeology Department U
Thein Lwin reported that the old city of Beikthano was
mentioned in ancient Myanmar historical records but
they are incomplete. In the Zabukuncha treatise of
Taungdwin Sayadaw Khingyi Phyaw and Cetiyakatha
treatise of Monyway Sayadaw, the dynasties of Pyu were
mentioned. The Archaeo-logy Department made
excavations at Beikthano city. During the period from
1959 to 1963, Director U Aung Thaw and technicians of
Archaeology Department excavated 25 mounds in
Beikthano to put on record the economic, social and
religious affairs of the old city. From 1995 to 2002
during the time of the State Peace and Development
Council Government, 11 mounds were excavated. The
charcoals found from mounds No 9 and No 10 were
examined with radiocarbon-14 method. It is found that
the findings are over 2,000 years old. Among the
excavated items were ancient coins with Sriwussa
symbol. Such coins were spread to Dwarawady of
Thailand and Funan (Oc Eo) of Cambodia. The Sriwussa
symbol can also be found in ancient caves of 2nd
century BC at Udayagiri mountain in India.
Archaeological and historical researchers have agreed
that the old city of Beikthano was in existence in 2nd
century BC with high standard of culture and
civilization.
Next, Research Assistant U Khin Maung Gyi of
Archaeology Department reported that Beikthano city
had been destroyed by fire twice and the charcoals
excavated from No 9 mound were found to be of over
2,000 years after being examined with carbon-14
method. Hence, it can soundly be said that Beikthano
city had been established before the Christ. He
continued to say that a human skeleton excavated from
No 14 mound was found to be of Mongoloid man. Medical
experts agreed that the man lived in affluent life.
The foundation of a ceti found in No 3 mound shows
that Buddhism flourished in Beikthano and there were
contacts with Andara region of India. Hence, Beikthano
city was in existence with high standard of culture
and civilization over 2,000 years ago.
Afterwards, Secretary-1 General Khin Nyunt gave
necessary instructions. He called on researchers to
continue research works to have sound evidences of
Beikthano city.
Then, the Secretary-1 and party viewed the beads,
earthen pots, glass earings, coins, pipes, pieces of
pots and bricks of Pyu period excavated in old
Beikthano City displayed at the briefing hall. They
then viewed a wall which has outer wall with 140 feet
in diameter and inner wall with 108 feet and 23 feet
in diameters assumed to be a pagoda.
Afterwards, the Secretary-1 and party viewed a ruined
building on No (2) mound. The building is
98.5-foot-long, 34-foot-wide and 3.5-foot-high one
with a portico, a big room and eight small rooms. It
is also assumed to be a place for a family or a
monastery. Then, they viewed brick walls that may be
considered an old palace site on mound No (5) of the
old Beikthano city.
Then, the Secretary-1 asked the Minister for Culture
to carry on excavation work and to construct a small
archaeological museum.
Afterwards, the Secretary-1 and party arrived at
