on reclamation of 106 acres of land out of 944 acres

of the land under maize, sunflower, water-melon,
potatoes, onion, orchid and flowers.

After hearing the reports, the Secretary-1 said that
Indawgyi and Inlay Lakes have been in existence
naturally in Myanmar. Due to existing natural floating
islands, floating villages and PhaungdawU Pagoda,
Inlay Lake is popular in the world. It contributes
towards promotion of the tourism industry.

In addition, the lake supplies water to Moebye Dam for
generating electricity from Lawpita Hydel Power Plant.
Therefore, the lake is a water resource area for
generating hydro electricity of the State.

He said Head of State Senior General Than Shwe gave
guidance on conservation of forests and environment
around 20 miles of Inlay Lake for durability of the
invaluable lake and protection of nature.

According to the findings of the experts, the causes
of shallowness of the lake are erosion and siltation
of sand due to depletion of forest in watershed areas,
slash and burn cultivation method, vertical
cultivation, cultivation on steep slopes, pasturing
the cattle and burning of grass on pasture.

He said the Head of State also gave guidance to
prohibit estabilshing another villages and making of
floating islands in the lake, to remove unnecessary
floating islands and rubbish in the lake, to ensure
proper drainage of nine canals, and conservation of
natural beauty and value of the lake, not to cut down
trees and not to reclaim land for taungya within 20
miles, to make continued efforts for conservation of
forests and cultivation after formation of the
conservation committee by the Ministry of Forestry, to
cooperate with similar committees and to open the
control office in Nyaungshwe.

The Secretary-1 continued to say that in order to
implement the guidance of the Head of State, the tasks
have been laid down to prevent silting up the Inle
Lake - to dredge silt and sand carried by the current
of creeks that flow into the lake; to regularly remove
water hyacinth, flotsam and duckweed in the lake; to
control and restrict more construction of houses and
plantations on floating islands in the lake; to ensure
greening of surrounding areas of the lake by
preserving the trees in the watershed areas and
nurturing the woods around the lake; to take measures
for conservation of water resources needed for Lawpita
hydel-power stations; and to keep and preserve the
natural beauty and value of the lake by cooperation of
the government, the public and the Tatmadaw.

The five-year plan is being implemented for
conservation of the forests, water resources, lands
and the bird sanctuary 20 miles around the lake, he
said. For successful implementation of the projects,
Shan State Supervisory Committee chaired by the
chairman of Shan State Peace and Development Council
and Township Supervisory Committee chaired by the
chairman of Township Peace and Development Council
have been formed. Respective ministries have been
carrying out tasks for ensuring proper flow of water
from the creeks that empties into the lake, forming
forest reserves, maintenance of line of descendants,
establishing watershed plantations, growing
plantations for firewood and mixed plantations of
crops and trees and wind-breaking trees, planting

preventive measures against bank erosion, for
conservation of biological diversities, dredging sand
and silt, removing the unnecessary floating islands
and duckweed, construction of embankment for
prevention of silt and sand and cultivation of crops
and distribution of seeds of crops.

The five-year plan has been implemented for three
years and so there is two years left. So, it is
incumbent upon the officials concerned to supervise
the tasks for meeting the set targets in time.

In conclusion, the Secretary-1 called on the members
of the supervisory committees and officials to
systematically supervise the project for durability of

the press conferences. Ywet Sit group is the remnants

MTA, there is no need to explain about them. They are
still engaged in drug trafficking up to date. They are
not only the drug trafficking group but also the
terrorist group. Since 1996 they have been killing the
innocent people and committing the destructive acts
persistently. They committed acts of killing innocent

As stated above, it is obvious that KNU and SURA
insurgent groups are committing more terrorist acts.
The KNU said that they perpetrated destructive acts
and they announced that they would continue to commit
such acts. They have admitted that they are terrorist
group.

Though SURA Ywetsit said they were working for the
cause of Shan nationals with the support of the
remnant runaway Shan terrorists, it is obvious that
the group is a drug trafficking terrorist insurgent
one that perpetrated terrorist acts. Next, Deputy
Minister for Foreign Affairs U Khin Maung Win and
Brig-Gen Than Tun and Col San Pwint of the Ministry of
Defence replied to the queries raised by local and
foreign journalists.

In replying to the queries of the journalists, Deputy

rumours to the effect that salaries of service
personnel would be enhanced and new K 5,000 notes
would be issued were totally untrue. The press
conference ended at 9 am. Afterwards, the journalists

people by KNU and SURA terrorist groups.
