Really??? 100 million US for the tin refinery. U Pauk should
check his figures before he gives another speech to the
diplomatic crowd. Not too long ago he told Ma Thanegi of
the Myanmar Times that the refinery was only worth about
1.5 million

"They have discovered a huge mine containing at least nine different
minerals which will be found to include, they believe, titanium.
Indeed it was the search for titanium which led the Wa authorities to
the mine which offers tin, among other metals, in abundance."Since
two years ago, we have electric power from the four hydro plants in
the region," U Pau Yu Chan explained." So we are building a mineral
processing plant, so that we need not sell the ore. Better to sell
the refined minerals, we should get nearly double the money." The
processing plant being built under the shadow of the peak which
supplies the ore will cost $1.5 million in total. With so little
need for electricity in the region, the Wa people use only a third
of the available power supply at present. It leaves them with ample
capacity to set up a great many processing plants in the future.
U Pau Yu Chan said he hoped more foreigners would come to see for
themselves the resources his people were harvesting. Through ore
alone, last year, they made US$8 million." (MTBR: 3:53)
