Secretary-1 inspects Sittway University Project and prawn breeding

Yangon, 1 Jan - Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen
Khin Nyunt inspected Sittway University Project in Sittway, Rakhine State,
yesterday. Accompanied by members of the State Peace and Development Council
Maj-Gen Aung Htwe and Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than of the Ministry of Defence,
Chairman of Rakhine State Peace and Development Council Commander Brig-Gen
Maung Oo, the ministers, the Chief of Staff (Navy), the deputy ministers,
officials of the State Peace and Development Council Office and heads of
department, the Secretary-1 heard a report on the project presented by
Superenteding Engineer of Rakhine State U Thein Kyaw and Pro-Rector U Wan Tin
of the University. Deputy Minister for Education U Myo Nyunt gave a
supplementary report.

Secretary-1 Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt gave suggestions, saying that the education
promotion programmes were implemented stage by stage in the basic education
level for progress of the national education standard. The special four-year
education promotion programmes and long-term education programmes have been
laid down and implemented to link the basic education sector and the higher
education sector. Teaching and learning skills have been promoted in the
higher education level for development of the national education sector. In
addition, the institutions of higher learning have been extended and upgraded
in the whole country with a view to enabling students to pursue higher
education region-wise and to producing qualified human resources. Thus, all
the professors and the facultiy members should strive in harmony in accord
with the educational objectives.

The Secretary-1 and party inspected the university in a motorcade. On arrival
at a cold storage and an ice factory of Shwe-tharawon She-hsaung Marine
Products Co Ltd in Sittway, the Secretary-1 and party were welcomed by
Secretary of Rakhine State Peace and Development Council Lt-Col Thein Kyaing,
Head of Office of the Rakhine State Fisheries Department U Soe Thu, Chairman
of the company U Kyan Khin and Managing Director U Thurein Win. U Thurein Win
reported to the Secretary-1 on prawn production process, type of finished
goods, system of storing finished goods and U Soe Thu on efforts being made
to shift from conventional method to advanced one in breeding prawns. After
attending to their needs, the Secretary-1 urged the FD officials to conduct
systematic research on shifting to modern breeding system and to organize and
educate the local entrepreneurs. He then inspected the reprocessing plant. U
Kyan Khin reported on storage and packaging of the processed prawns.

The ice factory can produce 30 tons of ice per day and the cold storage has
the capacity to store 300 tons of fish and prawns. The facilities are
reprocessing the fish and prawns produced in Rakhine State for export and
local distribution. In addition to producing ice for the reprocessing plant,
the ice factory is selling its surplus products to trawlers and prawn
traders. The facility can produce six tons of finished prawns and two tons of
finished fish per day. In An, the Secretary-1 and party met with military
officers, departmental heads and members of NGOs at An Station. The
discussions were centred on regional development tasks.

An Township Peace and Development Council Chairman U Tun Kyi reported on
location and area of the township, organization of village-tracts and
villages and social, health and education development works. The Secretary-1
said he and his team arrived there to look into the requirements to develop
the township. The government has been continuously striving for peace,
stability and economic progress of the nation and to promote the economic and
social sectors. As long as there is peace and stability and the people join
hands with the government, more favourable foundations for national economic
development will emerge.

As the favourable foundations are emerging, the government is giving priority
to gaining proportionate progress in all the regions of the nation and
further improving the economic and social standards of the people. Despite
the many favourable conditions there, the road transport was poor in the
state; in this regard, Head of State Senior General Than Shwe has given
guidance to develop the transport infrastructure of the state within three
years to implement the regional development projects. In accord with the
guidance, many motor roads including the Yangon-Sittway Highway and bridges
including over 10 large bridges have been built to link all the parts of the
state. As An Township, Rakhine State's gateway to other parts of the nation,
is located on the new highways including the Yangon-Sittway Highway, it will
develop together with the rest of the state.

Local authorities, departmental officials and local people should
harmoniously strive to gradually develop An in accord with the
characteristics of a modern town. At the same time, they should make efforts
for progress of agriculture, which is the nation's basic economy, to help
develop regional and national economy. At a time when endeavours are being
made for all-round progress of the nation, the entire people should practise
thrifty methods in using everything including cooking oil, fuel and power.
Cultivation and production of oil crops such as sesamum, groundnut and
mustard should be extended. Moreover, experimental cultivation of export
crops such as cotton, beans and pulses and rubber should also be promoted.

As Rakhine State is home to various national races, all should live in amity
and harmony and to serve each other's interests to strengthen the spirit of
national solidarity and Union Spirit. Local authorities and departmental
personnel should take the leading role in consolidating the national
solidarity. The social organizations including the Union Solidarity and
Development Association which are actively taking part in all the regional
development, education, health and social endeavours, must be consolidated
and extended. Their force should be effectively used in regional development
undertakings. Afterwards, Secretary-1 cordially greeted those present at the
meeting. They then inspected the chosen site to build a hospital on
An-Sittway Highway and town development undertakings. They rested for the
night in Sittway.
