( 8 ) Minister inspects cultivated fields and sluice gates
Yangon, 1 Dec - Minister for Agriculture and Irrigation Maj-Gen Nyunt Tin,
together with the director-general of Irrigation Department, the managing
director of Myanma Agriculture Ser-vice, and members of Bago Division
Agricultural Coordination Committee, this morning inspected over 500 acres of
summer paddy fields which are cultivated with water irrigated from Moyungyi
Lake in Thanatpin Township, Bago Division. The officials reported on works
being carried out for increasing per acre yield of export quality Hmawby-2
paddy strain with the use of advanced cultivation methods.
Then, the Minister met with farmers and departmental staff. He asked the
farmers to grow crops with proper land preparation; to utilize farm machinery
at all the stages of cultivation; and to turn conventional cultivation into
mechanized farming while single cropping system is changed into
multi-cropping. He also asked departmental officials to provide necessary
assistance for cultivation of crops. Afterwards, Minister Maj-Gen Nyunt Tin
cruised along the Bago-Sittaung canal by motor-boat and inspected the flow of
water as well as Bagan-Nyaungbin and Kyaikpadaing spillways. He also
inspected the Tarwa sluice gate in Thanatpin Township.
The Minister also inspected the construction of a new sluice gate near the
existing Tarwa sluice gate. The new sluice gate is being constructed by the
Irrigation Department with the use of heavy machines. Officials concerned
reported on the progress of work so far carried out. The existing Tarwa
sluice gate is merely 30 feet wide and it alone cannot manage the outflow of
sufficient water in rainy season. Hence, the new sluice gate with 330 feet in
breadth is being built there.
It will also be beneficial to ensuring proper outflow of water from
inundated fields in Thanatpin Township in Bago District, to ensuring regular
flow of water, to protecting surrounding areas from being flooded in the
rainy season, to storing fresh water in summer; and to preventing sea water
from coming in. The new sluice gate will benefit over 38,000 acres of
cultivated land. At the briefing hall, the director of Irrigation Department
(Construction Group 6) reported to the minister on conditions of existing
sluice gates, those under construction and those to be built. The minister
gave instructions on maintenance of sluice gates. Afterwards, the minister
also inspected the construction of Paikkyon sluice gate at the junction of
Bago river and Paikkyon creek. The sluice gate in Kawa Township will benefit
30,000 acres of land. It will have 37 valves each of which will be 6 feet by
12 feet. He also inspected in-let and out-let canals.
