Coping with water scarcity: Solidarités International’s intervention in Pauktaw camps in 2024 (Letter #2 June 2024)

Description:

"This document is a follow-up on the situation in the Pauktaw Internally Displaced People (IDP) camps, where SOLIDARITÉS INTERNATIONAL (SI) is providing comprehensive WASH assistance, in particular to ensure continuous access to water during the water scarcity period. SI started operating in Rakhine State during the emergency phase following Cyclone Giri in 2010. It then responded to the humanitarian crisis resulting from two waves of intercommunal violence in 2012. Since February 2013, SI has been working in Pauktaw IDP camps (ANYC, NC1, NC2, KNP) and village (ANYV), both hosting Rohingyas. Over the past months, continued blockade of Sittwe-Pauktaw waterways and the lack of Travel Authorization (TA) issued by the authorities still hampered access to the 5 Pauktaw IDP sites. Since November 2023, critical materials required for the water scarcity mitigation could indeed no longer be transported from Sittwe, bringing related activities to a standstill. Most of the planned ponds’ improvements had to be postponed until after the monsoon season. Facing growing concerns related to water scarcity, Camp Management Committees (CMC) and communities agreed to reduce the quantity of water treated and distributed per person, allowing to extend the sufficiency period and thus delaying the water scarcity response itself. In May 2024, thanks to close coordination efforts with the WASH cluster and UNICEF, SI secured alternative solutions for some materials and waterboating was finally underway. As of June 15, 18,512 individuals are benefitting from water in camps, delivered to them as part of SI’s water scarcity response. Further joint efforts will be needed in the coming months, however, to find alternative ways of procuring supplies”..."
