'On our part, we demand dialogue. But if they are not going to do that and continue the offensives against us, we have to resist and fight back. That is our own measure. We are in a position to resist. Today, we are taking part in the revolution and it is just. The public has the right to defend itself. As for the oppressed public, if they are warred upon, they have the rights to defend themselves.'
Padoh Mahn Sha Laphan, General Secretary, Karen National Union, 10/07/06
Heritage Background: Notification by KNU Regarding Pastor Timothy
Notification by KNU Regarding Pastor Timothy
1. Pastor Timothy is a person engaged in religious work. He had been involved in the KNU activities on a part time basis. He was expelled from the KNU by Executive Order, dated June 10, 2005, on grounds of his irresponsible activities.
2. He is a person engaged in acts to blemish the honour of the KNU and revolutionary struggle of the Karen people. He has been sowing dissension and disunity within the KNU and the Karen revolutionary struggle. He exploits the KNU and the Karen revolutionary struggle for personal gains. His worst offences are misuse of the name of KNU without knowledge of the Central Headquarters for treacherous activities.
3. For that reason, we would like to notify to all concerned that Pastor Timothy is no longer a member of the KNU and he is a person attempting to destroy the Karen revolution and a traitor to the Karen cause. All his activities have nothing to do with the KNU, the KNLA or the Karen revolutionary struggle.

| A small group of indiviudals backed by influential Karens in Rangoon and Singapore and led by Pastor Timothy have been holding unsanctioned negotiations with the Burmese regime. According to border sources a meeting was held last week in Myawaddy between members of Pastor Timothy's group and the Rangoon based Karen leaders Dr Simon Tha and Dr Paw Paw in relation to an ailing Bo Mya going to Rangoon either for medical treatment or to agree some form of political settlement outside of the Karen National Union. |
