Description: "..This paper presents the results of a sociolinguistic survey of the Pwo Karen people in northern Thailand, with a special focus on those located furthest from the center of literature development in Chiang Mai province. It was hypothesized that the Pwo Karen in some areas of northern Thailand speak a language unintelligible with the Northern Pwo Karen language of Chiang Mai province. Therefore, the purpose of this survey was to determine whether there are any unintelligible varieties and whether there is any further need for language development among the Pwo Karen of northern Thailand. Language vitality, attitudes, and bilingualism were assessed using sociolinguistic interviews. Intelligibility was assessed using recorded text testing, and lexical similarity was assessed using wordlists. The survey’s conclusion is that further language development would be beneficial, because Pwo Karen is a vital language in northern Thailand, and there is substantial variation among speech varieties. Language development, however, might not include development of written materials in every dialect or group..."

Description: "...Rarely is the world able to read celebratory news about Burma. The stories that reach the international community involve the brutality of the long-reigning military regime and the diaspora of refugees in neighboring nations. In ethnically diverse regions like Shan State, the population struggles to survive forced relocation, a stagnant economy and a corrupt educational system that has suppressed ethnic languages and literature. It is somewhat remarkable then, that out of this oppression has emerged a generation of youth at home and in exile, who are dedicating their lives to promoting and preserving their culture and ethnic identities. They, like their parents and grandparents before, have carried these folktales on journeys through jungles, over mountains and across borders. Their stories, like them, are Kachin, Kayan, Pa-O, Shan and Wa; they highlight their love of nature, family and tradition. These ancient tales also inspired many students to compose new works fitting the modern age. Found near the end of this book, these contemporary stories reflect both the challenges facing their communities today and the better future they are dedicated to creating—one where they are free to pursue education, return to their homeland, and live in peace. The simple continued existence of Shan State’s folktales and the enthusiasm of SSSNY’s students to record, illustrate and share them, is a legacy for the children of their country who will inherit their peoples’ history. This book is a celebration of the region’s unique heritage—a reminder that Shan State’s culture and literature are still alive..."

Description: Abstract: "There are many unique traditional customs of the national races of Myanmar who are living in the Republic of the Union of Myanmar. The study of the traditional customs of a national race of Myanmar is the best way to learn about the traditional customs of Myanmar. The culture of a country is its life-blood. If the culture of a country had disappeared, the people of this country will be vanished completely. Today is the globalization age, therefore, preservation of our own culture is very necessary for all. As Dawei is situated in the southern part of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar, it is far from upper and central Myanmar. As a result, the traditional customs of Dawei people are different from the others. As Dawei is located at the inner part of Tanintharyi coastal region, it is a region where ancient traditional culture, folk songs, traditional dance and dialects can be preserved. The study focused on the unique traditional customs of Dawei People which are different from the traditional customs of oth er national races of Myanmar. This paper emphasizes some traditional customs of Daweis and famous religious festivals preserved untill today. It will contribute to understand the preservation of traditional customs of Dawei people and their preservations.".....Paper delivered at the International Conference on Burma/Myanmar Studies: Burma/Myanmar in Transition: Connectivity, Changes and Challenges: University Academic Service Centre (UNISERV), Chiang Mai University, Thailand, 24-26 July 2015.
