Description: King Thibaw was dethroned on 29 Nov. 1885. The proclamation of 1 Jan. 1886 declared Upper Burma to be an integral part of the British Empire. Diffferent kinds of administration for Upper Burma were contemplated: a buffer state, a protected state, a semi-protected state, and a regency were considered, but all were found impracticable. While the people expected a Myanmar Prince appointed by the British to succeed Thibaw, the Chambers of Commerce strongly advocated outright annexation. When Lord Dufferin visited Mandalay to see things for himself, he declined to receive the memorials submitted by the ex-Ministers. He recommended direct administration as the best course, so the Hluttaw was abolished and Upper Burma incorporated in British India, becoming a Scheduled District.....Subject Terms: 1. Description: This paper was read on 19 Nov. 1967 at Kanthaseinlai group. The author observes tha the First Anglo - Burmese Wa, which ended in 1826, cost Myanmar Rakhine and Tenessarim states. The Second Anglo - Burmese War, which ended in 1852, enabled the British Government to occupy Lower Burma. Subsequent relations between King Thibaw and the British foreign were not smooth; however, the British Government had not planned to occupy Upper Burma before March 1885. But the Rangoon Chamber of Commerce continually urged the Government to occupy Upper Burma. At that time Mindon-min had a problem in the Mandalay prison and the prisioners rebelled. Nearly 150 prisioners were killed, and after that affair the Rangoon Deputy Commissioner called a mass meeting and pointed out the weakness of the Thibaw?s administration. Description: This paper was originally written in Myanmar and read at the Saturday Literary Circle meeting held at the Po Wa Ziya Hall of the Hanthawady Press, Mandalay on 20th Sep, 1975. It was later read in English to the special meeting of the Burma Research Society on 15th October, 1975. Normally Bagan monuments are Ceti style with a solid structure or Ku, which were places of worship where people could enter the building to offer homage. In addition, there was also a House of the Law and House of the Monks of the Order. Many Bagan inscriptions record the donors as well as those who repaired the monuments. Some repairs were were necessary but others destroyed the original edifice. (2) Match the body with the correct finial and (3) Permit no mis-fit of materials or appearances.....Subject Terms: 1. Restoration-Bagan... 2. Religious Buildings-Bagan Period, 1044-1287

Description: This paper was read at the Kanthaseinlai Group meeting on 13th July 1958. It argues that the Myanmar (Burmans) were Buddhist long before King Anawrahta?s (Aniruddha) conquest of lower Burma. They did not practise Theravada Buddhism, rather they observed a form of Mahayana Buddhism much influenced by Vaishnavism and native Naga (serpent) worship. With the conquest of Thaton in 1057 AD by King Anawrahta Theravada Buddhism was introduced to Central Burma. According to the excavation of Srikshetra and Hanlin the Pyu already believed in Buddhism. This paper is based on Bagan inscriptions which reveal the spread of Buddhism between AD 1000-1300.....Subject Terms: 1. Religion-Myanmar... 2. Buddhism-Myanmar-Bagan period... 3. Description: The main line of attack in the Third Anglo Burmese War was up the Ayeyawady River. This route was anticipated by Myanma strategists, so in addition to the forts, blockades were created at various points. The strongest site was near Yin Ye? Rocks between Innwa and Sagaing. To block passage, an Irrawaddy Flotilla Steamer and large cargo boats were filled with rocks and sandbags and sunk. The water level above these obstructions was only about 2 to 3 feet. Taung Kwin Myosa Wungyi was in command and it would have been a major obstacle for the expeditionary forces to surmount. But providence was on the enemy?s side. The current changed because the water suddenly rose and a new channel opened. Then, before new barriers could be constructed, the Hluttaw ordered a surrender. .....Subject Terms: 1. Description: "During the last 100 years artistic relationships between the Pyu and Mon of Burma and the Dvāravatī Mon of Thailand have been frequently hinted at yet until recently these ideas had not been explored further. In light of contemporary re-search, and in particular, relatively stable access to Burma, there is renewed interest in the cultures which inhabited the region extending from Upper Burma through Lower Burma and into central and south-west Thailand during the first millennium CE. Conventionally viewed as distinct cultural groups, on reappraising archaeological and historical re-search associated with the Pyu, Mon and Dvāravatī it is now suggested that these communities were more closely linked than traditionally thought."

Description: This paper was read at the first Union of Burma Research Conference on 25th March 1966. Myanmar?s attempt at modernizing the country is described through construction of nearly fifty factories long before the British invasion of Upper Burma. Crown Prince Nyangyan sent state scholars to India, Europe and England, then used them to develop modern industry. Foreign workers were also employed. The Prince saw the need to forestall another attack by the British. Hence the Gun factory, Iron Foundry and Ship building had priority. Description: Political conditions of Myanmar immediately after the annexation (1886-87) as seen through the Indian press. The people were governed by a new master. Rebels were branded as dacoits by a critical Indian press which ridiculed and attacked Lord Dufferin?s direct administration. They called His Excellency a quack politician, not a farseeing statesman. The press favoured a native prince on the Myanmar throne, a practice common in India. The press argued that the English were suppressing the so-called dacoits at the expense of Indian tax-payers.....Subject Terms: 1. Myanmar - Political conditions, 1886-87; 2. Famous Myanmar archaeologists and research officers describe Pyu cities. "Ancient Beikthano City" was an excavation report written by U Aung Thaw, retired Director - General of Dept. of Archaeology. It describes Beikthano (Vishnu) as being near Taungdwingyi in Magwe Division, and flourished from about 1st century A.D until it was destroyed in the 5th century A.D. It was a very important early Pyu city. "Ancient Hanlin City", by U Myint Aung, research officer, Dept of Archaeology. Hanlin was a Pyu city 10 miles from Wetlet in Shwebo District, Mandalay Division. Hanlin city flourished between the 4th and 9th century A.D. Their coins had symbols and they are were literate. Buddhism developed early in Hanlin, but image worship was not evident. Hanlin city was burnt and destroyed in 9th century A.D. "Ancient Srikshetra", by U Sein Maung Oo, is an excavation report.
