The policies of the National League for Democracy towards the ethnic nationalities as stated in the (Provisional) Constitution and (Draft) Policies of the National League for Democracy in October 1988: Ethnic Nationalities (a)"... Special priority will be given to resolve the problem of the ethnic nationalities. In doing so, the National League for Democracy will strive to the bitter end to achieve the best solution on the basis of recognizing equal rights for all ethnic nationalities, showing sincerity, friendship, and respect for the beliefs of others, having high regard for and believing in basic human rights, and promoting the literature, culture and customs of the ethnic nationalities in accordance with their wishes Should all ethnic nationalities extend their cooperation in resolving problems we are convinced that the objectives of seeking peace in the Union and harmony among nationalities will certainly be successful. We must strive to successfully implement these objectives." (b) "Since it is our desire to establish a Union that is deve- loped and economically strong, we will ensure that every state and region is able to freely undertake economic development tasks. We will implement the right of self-determination of the states by practicing the principle which ensures harmony between the nationalities fully enjoying their inherent rights and the prosperity and welfare of the Union as a whole..."
