Mizzima News (www.mizzima.com)

Aizawl, Sept. 19: India and Burma are preparing to officially inaugurate
the India-Myanmar Friendship Bridge at Mizoram-Burma border, which was
completed recently, according to Home Minister of Mizoram State Mr.
Tawnluia.

Although the exact date for the inauguration has not been fixed yet,
Mizoram government has requested the Central Government to contact the
Burmese authorities for the date, the home minister said today. "The
bridge has to be inaugurated by both sides (India and Burma). Although
we do not know when it will happen, we think that it will be done very
soon".

The bridge, built with the support of Indian government, was completed
in the last week of August and the people from both sides have started
using the bridge.

The Central Government of India sanctioned Rupee 146 lakhs (about US $ 3
lakhs) for the bridge and the construction was undertaken by the Public
Works Department (PWD) of Mizoram State. It took four months to complete
the bridge and heavy vehicles can ply on the bridge.

The 170-feet long bridge connects Zokhuthar Village in Mizoram and Rih
Village in Chin State of Burma across the Tio River.

The current border trade between India and Burma is likely to get a
boost with the completion of the bridge, as it becomes a new trade route
between the two countries. The bilateral border trade is also being
carried out through another trade route in Manipur State ? Tamu-Moreh
route.
