Taliban ban women visits to picnic spots

The Sunday Times (New Delhi)
July 15, 2001

KABUL: Afghanistan's ruling Taliban militia Friday ordered Afghan women
not to visit picnic spots or tourists resorts across the country,
Taliban-run radio reported. "The Afghan women cannot go to these
places," Radio Shariat said.
The broadcast quoted the regime's Vice and Virtue Ministry as saying
"some women are seen going to resorts as men , that's forbidden." It
said the ministry's personnel, known as religious police, would be
patrolling the resorts to enforce the ban.
The brief announcement gave no reason for the ban nor did it specify
punishment for offenders. The fundamentalist Islamic militia
controlling mist of Afghanistan has enforced strict interpretation of
Sharia law in the area under its control. It has barred women from
education and work outside their homes and calls for segregation of
unrelated men and women.
Residents say women are rarely seen at parks or picnic places since
the Taliban seized Kabul in 1996.
