A joint delegation of Members of Parliament, trade union leaders
and business executives from India are visiting China early next month
to study the world's largest developing economy and to strengthen
India-China cooperation, according to Confederation of Indian Industry
(CII) today. This will be the first ever joint Indian delegation of
government, industry and trade union leaders to visit China. The 26
member delegation would be led by Dr. (Mrs) Najma Heptullah, Deputy
Chairperson of Rajya Sabha (Upper House) and would be co-led by Mr Arun
Bharat Ram, former President of CII. The delegation will include eleven
Members of Parliament from the leading political parties, three trade
union leaders and ten industry representatives.

The apex chamber said the delegation is scheduled to meet top political
leaders, senior government officials and key industry representatives in
Beijing, Shanghai, Urumqui and Shenzhen during the tour, which is from
1st July to 7th July.

According to the National Bureau of Statistics, China's Gross Domestic
Product (GDP) grew by 8% last year, touching a historic high of $
1,077.16 billion (Yuan 8,940.40 billion). The Foreign Trade Volume of
China, during 2000, achieved another high of $ 474.30 billion, thus
ensuring a trade surplus of $ 24.10 billion and a very comfortable level
of Foreign Exchange Reserves of $ 165.60 billion.

"This study mission will give an opportunity to the parliamentarians and
the trade unions leaders to get a first hand report of the reform
process in China. It will be pertinent for the Indian industry to
understand the affect of pursuing the reform process and the way China
has addressed issues, which have arisen following the introduction of
reforms such as loss of jobs and disinvestment among others", said the
CII. "Both India and China have much to offer each other in terms of
economic cooperation, technological and business opportunities."
