    Birthday celebrations of Burma's democratic leader held in India

            Burma pro-democracy activists and their supporters in India
joined together in the celebration of 56th birthday of Nobel Peace
Laureate and Burma's democratic leader Daw Aung San Suu Kyi.
Celebrations, meetings and multi-faith prayers were held today in New
Delhi and Aizawl of Mizoram State in India.

In New Delhi, a multi-faith prayer was held at Raj Ghat for the good
health of Aung San Suu Kyi who remains under house arrest in the Burmese
capital Rangoon. In the evening, a meeting jointly organized by National
League for Democracy (Liberated Area), Association of Peoples of Asia
(APA) and Indo-Myanmar Friendship Society was held at India
International Center (IIC) in New Delhi.

Presiding at the meeting, Ms. Nimala Deshpandey, a well-known Gandhian
and former Member of Parliament expressed her support to the on-going
"talks" between Burmese opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi and the
military junta, which is known as State Peace and Development Council
(SPDC).

Former Chairperson of the National Commission for Women Ms. Mohini Giri,
former supervisor of the All India Radio (Burmese Service) U Maw Thiri,
diplomats from Canada and U.S embassies in New Delhi also participated
in the birthday celebration at IIC.
