                     Burma women groups held protest

New Delhi, June 19, 2001

            Burma women activists belonging to various organizations
staged a protest rally in the capital this morning calling for an end of
military repression and unconditional release of Burma's democratic
leader Aung San Suu Kyi who has been held under house arrest since
September last year. Holding posters and shouting slogans, about a
hundred women activists gathered at Jantar Mantar and marched along the
Parliament Street, protesting against the ruling military government,
State Peace and Development Council (SPDC), in Burma.

Today is the 56th birthday of Aung San Suu Kyi and exiled women
organizations of Burma celebrate her birthday, June 19, as Women of
Burma's Day in honour of her outstanding leadership. A multi-faith
prayer was held at Jantar Mantar for her good health.

Prominent political leaders from India including Samata party leader Ms.
Jaya Jaitely and Member of Parliament Mr. Kuldip Nayar and activists
from Tibetan Women Association joined the protest.

Moreover, a joint statement was issued today by 15 Burma women
organizations based in India, Thailand, Japan, Australia and United
States pledging their continued support to Aung San Suu Kyi to work for
peace, national reconciliation and democracy in Burma. "She is a living
hope and a symbol of inspiration for the women of Burma because she
provides courageous and wise leadership to all the people", said the
statement.
