The Indian government at last deported the Burmese fishermen who had
been rotting in Calcutta jails for years to their country today. They
were deported this morning by Indian airline flight. The Indian
authorities have paid (about Rs. 3 lakhs) for the air tickets for flying
them to their country while the Burmese embassy in New Delhi issued
passports for them.

The total number of Burmese deported this morning is 59, including those
Burmese fishermen who were arrested from Thai-owned fishing boats in
July 1997 after they crossed into Indian territorial water.
