On the eve of International Women?s Day, the Samata Party has urged for
the international attention to focus on the ?terrible? plight of women
in the Taliban-ruled Afghanistan. Leading a silent candle light
demonstration at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi today against the
destruction of Buddha statues in Afghanistan, the Samata Party?s
president Ms. Jaya Jaitly highlighted the plight of women in
Afghanistan.

?They have been oppressed, murdered, bought, sold and degraded with
impunity while the world has remained largely silent. Their spirit has
sought to be smashed in the same manner as the cultural heritage of
Bamiyan. History, culture, women ? who or what will be next?? she said.

More than 200 people from India, Tibet and Burma joined the candle light
demonstration this evening, calling upon all right thinking people to
condemn and prevent all these ?barbarous? acts before the Taliban
further hurt the basic principles of humanity.

?The Taliban have forgotten that they are a part of a world community of
civilized beings and have allowed medieval, obscurantist ideas to wrap
the sense of season and justice with which all human beings are
endowed?, said today?s statement of the Samata Party, which is a partner
in the ruling Indian government.

Urging the women in Burma to show solidarity to the Afghan women who are
being oppressed by the Taliban, Jaya Jaitly said that the Taliban are
destroying not only history, culture or statues but also the spirit of
women in the country.

Indian defence minister George Fernandes also participated in the
demonstration.
