Bombarding of Buddha statues in Afghanistan by the ruling Taliban has
outraged the sentiments of Buddhists all over India and around the
world. The Buddhists in Delhi, for the third consecutive day, gathered
in the Capital today to protest against the destruction of Buddha
statues in Afghanistan.

More than 300 Buddhists, including monks from India, Burma, Tibet, Sri
Lanka and Bangladesh, expressed their anguish and shock at the ?heinous?
act of the Taliban to destroy the Buddha statues and artifacts in the
country. The demonstrators belonging to various Buddhist organizations
such as All India Bheikhu Sangha, All India Bheikhu Maha Sangha and
Buddhist Society of India held the protest rally at Janta Manta in New
Delhi this morning.

The Burmese Buddhist monks who are residing in New Delhi also joined the
demonstration. ?As a Buddhist and as a person who cherishes the ancient
art, I am sad to hear that the priceless ancient statues are being
destroyed. The world community should unanimously demand the Taliban to
immediately stop the destruction of the statues?, said U Pyin Nya Wara,
President of the All Burma Young Monks Union (ABYMU - India) who
participated in the demonstration.

The demonstrators also urge the Government of India to move a resolution
at the United Nations General Assembly denouncing the ?barbaric? act of
the Taliban who they say should be persecuted by the International Court
of Justice.
