Myanmar to go ahead with dam

The Times of India (New Delhi)
January 16, 2001

DHAKA: Myanmar will go ahead with the construction of an embankment on
the bank of river Naf which may further aggravate the already tense
situation along the Bangladesh-Myanmar border in the Southeastern Cox's
Bazar.

"We will go ahead with the construction of the embankment to prevent
sail erosion," said Myanmar Ambassador U Ohn Thwin said after meeting a
senior official of the Bangladesh Ministry of Foreign Affairs Sunday.
Thwin delivered the Myanmar government's reply to the protest Dhaka
lodged last week with Yangon over the construction of the embankment by
Nasaka, Myanmar border guards, in violation of the border agreement and
international rules. (IANS)
