FREE BURMA CAMPAIGN (SOUTH AFRICA)

[Media Statement]

The Free Burma Campaign in South Africa welcomes the 53rd anniversary of =
Independence for Burma. After many years of struggle, Burma gained =
national independence on 4th January 1948.

Since 1962, Burma has been under a military dictatorship. Its people =
have consistently been denied peace and basic human rights. The military =
junta cracked down on the pro-democracy movement in 1988 (8-8-88) and =
the junta calling itself the State Peace and Development Council (SPDC) =
has ignored the will of the people. The elections of May 1990 =
demonstrated overwhelming support for the pro-democracy leader and Nobel =
Peace laureate Daw Aung San Suu Kyi and her party, the National League =
for Democracy (NLD). Instead, it has embarked on a course of repression =
to intimidate, harass, arrest and imprison the elected MPs and prevent =
them from exercising their right to convene a parliament. Thousands of =
political prisoners including nearly 200 elected parliamentarians, =
students, members of NLD, & Monks are held in detention.

Nobel Laureate, Daw Aung San Suu Kyi was confined to her Rangoon home on =
Sept. 22, 2000, after she defied government restrictions on her =
movements and tried to travel by train to the northern city of Mandalay =
to visit members of her embattled National League for Democracy. Since =
that time, she has been under de facto house arrest, & has spent over =
101 consecutive days under house arrest as the new year began, despite =
International calls on the military government to release her. Burma's =
military regime has a history of arresting and illegally detaining Daw =
Aung San Suu Kyi, she was held illegally from 1989 to 1995.

a.. We, the Free Burma Campaign in South Africa fully support for =
"Freedom of Aung San Suu Kyi" and the restoration of democracy, justice =
and basic human rights in Burma.
a.. We strongly urge the South African Government to continue its =
support of Aung San Suu Kyi, with action rather than "LIP SERVICE" for =
the restoration of democracy in Burma.=20
b.. We also request local diplomats and representatives from =
International Organizations, to support action for democratic change in =
Burma.=20
c.. We appeal to various Human Rights Organizations, Non-Governmental =
Organizations, & Trades Unions in South Africa to show your solidarity =
and support.
