Mutiny of Manipur Rifles soldiers to spread to other battalions

Imphal, Manipur, December 11, 2000
Mizzima News Group (www.mizzima.com)

There are reports that mutiny of the Manipur Rifles jawans of the First
Battalion likely to spread to other battalions as the state government
tries to resolve the problem. On the 8th December, over 1000 jawans
belonging to the First Battalion put down their arms in protest against
what they alleged as misappropriation of funds. The jawans claimed that
Rs. 1.67 crore meant for their salary, special allowances and house rent
were misappropriated by the concerned authorities.

The jawans are camped themselves in the battalion compound and locked
the camp gates preventing anyone from entering the campus. Although the
deputy chief minister and chief secretary of Manipur went to pacify the
jawans yesterday, they were forced to return after their cars were
stoned by the jawans.

Manipur Rifles is the state armed police of Manipur State, which is
bordering with Burma. Manipur Rifles are largely responsible for the
maintenance of law and order in the state and deployed at strategic
points. As the jawans are not reporting to duty, it has affected the
security of several VIPs including the chief minister.

The government is under pressure to resolve the problem soon as the
mutiny is likely to spread to other battalions.
