AGARTALA, Dec. 7. ? Army and special commando forces fanned out in
sensitive and border areas and the BSF put on high alert following
reports of arms shipment into the North-east by militants from across
the border.

Army and BSF sources said here today that commandos and specially
trained central para military forces, who arrived here yesterday, were
being deployed in areas bordering Bangladesh. They were briefed by
senior Army officers, including Lt Gen TS Shergil, GOC, Three Corps,
about the ?special mission? to prevent the arms shipment, worth US
$7,50,000.

The BSF?s Tripura, Cachar and Mizoram (TCM) frontier DIG Mr SK Vij told
reporters here today that following an instruction from their
headquarters the border guards were put an high alert and asked to
maintain maximum vigil along the Indo-Bangla border. The TCM frontier,
the second largest among the nine frontiers, has been asked to guard the
1,333.5 km Indo-Bangladesh and Indo-Myanmar borders.

Yesterday Lt Gen Shergil told newsmen here that two battalions of
specially trained commando forces were being brought to Tripura to be
deployed on possible routes along the Indo-Bangla border. Other central
para military forces, including the BSF, CRPF and state security forces,
were asked to tighten vigil along the international border following
reports of arms shipment from Bangladesh?s Cox?s Bazar, an international
sea port, 40 km from South Tripura?s bordering sub-division, Sabroom.
The general said a huge cache of arms is being brought into the region.
These arms were being brought from Thailand, he said.
