Myanmar withdraw from 2002 World Cup

AFP, Zurich, 15 November 2000.Myanmar have withdrawn from
the Asian preliminary round of the 2002 FIFA World Cup, football's
world governing body FIFA announced Wednesday.

FIFA said that they received a fax from Myanmar's national
association dated November 13 stating that they would not be
participating in the event.

Myanmar had been drawn in Group 2 slated to kick off the World
Cup qualifiers for Asia on November 24 in Tabriz, Iran.

There are now only three teams left in the group - Iran, Tajikistan
and Guam.

The first round of the Asian preliminary competition was to be
staged in 10 groups of four teams each to be played in a round-robin.

Two or three teams qualify from the group in addition to World Cup
co-hosts Japan and South Korea.

FIFA said that the late withdrawal would be submitted to their World
Cup Organising Committee for appropriate action.

Under FIFA regulations national associations which withdraw thirty
days before the start of the preliminary competition are liable to a
pay a fine of 40,000 Swiss francs (22,553 dollars), and forfeit their
entry fee.
