Maung Taw town in Rakhine State has become a centre point in smuggling
India-made phensidyl bottles from Bangladesh to other parts of Burma.
While a bottle of phensidyl, which is consumed as drug by the youngsters
in Burma, costs 200 Taka (Bangladesh currency) at Kayu Chaung in Taknef
town of Bangladesh-Burma border, it is valued at 2,000 Kyats (Burmese
currency) when it reaches to Maung Taw town. With the current exchange
rate, 2,000 Kyats is equivalent to 300 Taka and thus the smuggling of
phensidyl is a flourishing business.

In Bangladesh too, daily papers report of phensidyl coming from India
being seized by Bangladesh police and immigration officials.

The Independent Daily Newspaper reported that on October 5, three women
were arrested in Satkhira area along with 110 bottles of phensidyl from
a bus coming from India. The same day, a woman called Rehana 33, was
arrested from Bhairab Railway station along with 10 bottles of phensidyl
and two men were arrested by Bogra Intelligence Bureau along with 177
bottles of phensidyl, which brought from India to Dhaka.

Tension rises among Junta officials in Rakhine State of Burma

Dhaka, Mizzima News Group

Tension has been risen between immigration officials and army commander
in Rakhine State of Burma as both try to grab bribes from a motor boat
owner.

As the smuggling business grows in the Bangladesh-Burma border,
contrabands have been seized from time to time by the authorities in the
Burmese water territory. However, when the seized items (which include
sometimes million-Kyats worth motorboats) are auctioned and when the
officials take bribes from bidders, there has been tension between the
officials at immigration department and military area commander in
Rakhine State of Burma.

On 1st October, two smuggling motor boats coming from Bangladesh with
full of green peas and cement 2,000 sacks worth about 100 lakh Kyats
were seized by immigration officials (Maung Taw town Na Sa Ka).

On the very day of seize, the owner of motorboats from Taknef of
Bangladesh came and redeemed the boat with 50 lakh Kyats to the Na Sa Ka
officials before military authorities knew about it.

When the Na Sa Ka officials auctioned the seized green peas, the very
boat owner bid them with 90 lakh Kyats. Out of the amount, Na Sa Ka had
to share 60 lakh Kyats towards the fund of local military. Moreover, the
commander in chief of Sittwe town (capital of Rakhine State) also
demanded 20 lakh Kyats for his share out of 30 lakhs. When Na Sa Ka
officials refused to give the amount, there has been tension between
immigration department and military in the area.
