Statement on Aung San Suu Kyi Stand

STATEMENT ON AUNG SAN SUU KYI STAND-OFF

Nobel Peace Laureate and Burma's pro-democracy leader Daw Aung San Suu Kyi and other leaders of National League for Democracy (NLD) have been stopped by armed police at Dallah township, close to the capital Rangoon since August 24 (last Thursday). They were peacefully travelling to Kungyangon town, a few kilometers further from Dallah town for re-organization of NLD youth members.

This incident clearly shows that the military regime does not allow her and other members of the NLD party to move freely and organize even for party organizational work. Many countries have condemned the act of Burmese junta. Among them, the United States, Britain and European Union had protested and demanded that she and her colleagues be allowed to travel freely in their own country. London-based Amnesty International had said that restricting Suu Kyi's movements is another example of the military's attempts to stamp out "all peaceful opposition activities" in Burma. 

But, there is a complete silence from the Government of India over what is happening in its next door neighbor. Government of India is engaging in a so-called "working relationship" with the Burmese military junta, which is the worst human rights violating government in the world. A high-level delegation from India, led by Home Secretary Mr. Kamal Pande is currently in Burma having a four-day talks with Burmese counterparts to promote bi-lateral cooperation. 

We, members of All Burma Students League, express our outrage against the military regime in Burma that does not allow even basic rights of the citizens including freedom of movement.
 
We are concerned with the safety and health of Daw Aung San Suu Kyi and her entourage. It is the sole responsibility of the military government, that has ordered the blockade if the health and welfare of Daw Aung San Suu Kyi and her supporters become threatened. We demand the military junta of Burma to immediately remove the blockade and allow the free movement of all the citizens in the country. 

We earnestly request to the people, political parties and Government of India to express support and solidarity with Daw Aung San Suu Kyi and pro-democracy activists of Burma in their struggle for democracy. We request the Government of India to raise the issue of "roadside stand-off" in the on-going bilateral talks in Rangoon and to urge the military junta to guarantee the fundamental rights of the citizens including of Daw Aung San Suu Kyi.
