"Secretary-1 calls for efforts to increase tourist arrivals"

YANGON 12 Jan-Tourism Development Management
Committee held its Meeting 1/2000 at Strand Hotel
this afternoon, with an address by Chairman of
Tourism Development Management Committee
Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development
Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt.


Present on the occasion were the ministers, the
Yangon Mayor, the deputy ministers, members of
Tourism Development Management Committee,
officials of the State Peace and Development
Council Office, heads of departments and
officials.

The Secretary-l said the meeting is to lay down
future tasks for development of tourism industry
beginning from the year 2000 and tourist arrivals
are encouraging in the early period of the year.

He said tourism in Myanmar should achieve more
progress than the current extent as Myanmar is now
stable and peaceful.

He elaborated on many places of interest that can
attract tourists, ancient cultural heritage,
characteristics of national races, beaches, nature
tourism, cruise tours along Ayeyawady River,
existence of primates 40 million years ago,
evidence of Stone Age, Bronze Age, Iron Age,
ancient Pyu cities and Bagan city of high
standard.

Continuing, he said, Myanmar is stable and
peaceful and has better economic foundations,
advanced hotels and transport facilities.However,
he said, there is destructive group that is
opposeing every endeavours of the government is
sending fabricated news to international
community.  The group dispatched fabricated news
to external organizations and media which provided
assistance to them, he said.


Tourism industry in Myanmar has not come up to the
expectation due to the spread of fabricated news,
he said.He spoke on success of welcoming
ceremonies ushering in the new millennium
organized by tour operators held in Yangon,
Mandalay, Bagan, Innlay and Chaungtha and
presentation of traditional culture of national
races.


He pointed out that destructive elements would
continue to destroy the efforts for development of
tourism by government and private local tour
operators.He said ways and means are to be sought
to disseminate correct news and real situation in
Myanmar through the tourists and world media.

Minister for Hotels and Tourism Maj-Gen Saw Lwin
reported on hotel industry with foreign
investment, matters relating to internal hotels,
tourist arrivals, endeavours for development of
border area tourism, advertisement of tourism,
measures for promotion of Mekong River valley
tourism, efforts for development of human
resources development and participation in tourism
authority board of ASEAN.

Officials then took part in the discussions.In
conclusion, the Secretary-l said development of
tourism is a foreign exchange earning business and
it is also the contributing task to witness the
true situation in Myanmar.  Destructive elements
are spreading fabricated news about Myanmar saying
there is no security and tranquillity, plenty of
diseases and it is unsuitable for tourists to
visit.  He called for making efforts for
increasing tourist arrivals.
