Efforts for Developing and Flourishing of Traditional Medicine Gaining 
Momentum 
        
     A ceremony to open Yangon Traditional Medicine
Hospital (50-bed) of the Department of Traditional
Medicine of the Ministry of Health was held at the
hospital in Bahan Township on 8 January, addressed by
Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council
Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt. In his address, the Secretary-1
said; "Myanma traditional medicine entwined with
traditional belief, culture and customs based on
Myanmar topographical conditions, Myanma typical
character and Theravada Buddhism, has evolved in the
course of cultural history of Myanmar and has come to
flourish in the society of Myanmar as a national
attribute. Moreover, Myanma traditional Medicine is a
national heritage which has enabled Myanmar people to
be healthy and strong in the consecutive periods.
Myanmar people have relied on Myanmar traditional
medicine since the time of their ancestors; specially,
the majority of Myanmar national people who live in
rural areas have liked and used Myanma traditional
medicine so far. Furthermore, in the world of Myanma
traditional medicine, there are many branches of
profound traditional medicine, many treatises,
effective treatments and a great many proficient
traditional medicine practitioners, and herbal plants
are also common all over the nation like invaluable
heritage of forefathers. With the aim of ensuring the
systemic development of traditional medicine, the
Government is opening various courses such as
traditional medicine practitioners training course,
refresher course and diploma course, and measures are
being taken to get the people to easily understand the
efficacy and uses of herbal plants by publishing books
on traditional medicine."
        "Systematic arrangements are being made to carry out
laboratory experiments and research on preservation of
efficacy of traditional medicines, production of new
medicines and systematic and scientific production of
efficacious medicines which can cure diseases with no
known cure of western medicine. Traditional medicine
factories have been established in Yangon and
Mandalay, and 12 kinds of traditional medicine are
being produced on an extensive scale with a view to
enabling the people to use efficacious traditional
medicine. Herbal plant nurseries are also being set up
to ensure easy availability of raw herbal plants and
to preserve rare and valuable herbal plants; now, in
states and divisions, there are eight herbal plant
nurseries which occupy over 200 acres of land in all.
In order to ensure that traditional medicines produced
and distributed by the private sector are efficacious
and free from hazard, these medicines are examined in
accord with the traditional medicine law and
registration numbers and licences are being issued;
therefore, there are over 3,000 registered medicines
and over 500 licensed medicines. Hospitals (16-bed)
are being built in cities of states and divisions, and
four hospitals have been constructed and another four
hospitals are under construction. Mandalay Traditional
Medicine (50-bed) Hospital was opened in 1998, and
Yangon Traditional Medicine (50-bed) Hospital has been
opened today. The out-patient unit of the hospital
opened today will provide health care to cure various
illnesses and diseases, and if necessary, inpatients
will be accepted and treatment given; therefore,
health care can be provided extensively for national
people with the use of Myanma traditional medicine."
        "At the meeting of Health Ministers of South-East
Asian Nations held in Myanmar in October, 1999,
decisions have been made to include the traditional
medicine sector in the national health plans of every
nation and to carry out systematic experiments to make
sure that traditional medicines are free from hazards.
In Myanmar, efforts for the preservation, development
and flourishing of traditional medicine are gaining
momentum; and it can be found that Myanma traditional
medicine has already made a comeback.."
        The main building A of the hospital is 96 feet long
and 40 feet wide and the building B, 160 feet long and
40 feet wide, and they are two-storey reinforced
concrete buildings.
