Burmese workers report denied=20

A MEDIA report that the Ministry of Labour and Social Welfare (MOLSW) =
would import one million Burmese workers was incorrect, a member of the =
Sub-committee on Solving Foreign Labour Problems said yesterday.=20

Following the sub-committee's meeting on Wednesday, there was a news =
report that the MOLSW had decided to import one million Burmese workers. =
However, there was no such resolution at the meeting, said Pol Maj Gen =
Charnwut Watcharaphuk, deputy immigration police commissioner and member =
of the sub-committee.=20

Instead, the sub-committee reviewed issues that Thai government =
representatives would discuss with their Burmese counterparts when they =
meet to discuss illegal Burmese workers in Thailand, Charnwut said.=20

MOLSW could legally import foreign workers from any country if it wanted =
to, said Don Pramudwinai, spokesman for the Foreign Affairs Ministry. =
However, if MOLSW really wanted to import Burmese workers it would =
contact the Burmese government via the Foreign Affairs Ministry, Don =
said.=20

So far, his ministry had not received any such inquiry.=20
