(1) Inauguration of Kissapanadi Bridge in Rakhine State Celebrated
A ceremony to inaugurate Kissapanadi Bridge across
Kissapanadi River built by Bridge Construction Project
Special Group-4 of Public Works was held at the pandal
near the bridge in Kyauktaw Township in Rakhine State
on 2 January, 2000. Among ten bridges lying on
An-Sittway Section of Yangon-Sittway Highway,
Kissapanadi Bridge is the ninth. The big bridges
opened before are Yoe Creek Bridge, Kin Creek Bridge,
Myaungbwe Bridge, Ohnte Creek Bridge, Pikauk Bridge,
Yaw Creek Bridge, Dalet Creek and Ramong Bridge. Min
Creek Bridge, the tenth one, will soon be opened and
the building of over 200-mile-long Sittway-An
Highway will be completed soon. The people of Rakhine
State will be able to travel directly from Sittway to
Yangon from Sittway to Magway and Mandalay and to
other states and divisions by car. Due to Rakhine
Yoma ( Mountain Ranges) Rakhine State had no access
to other states and divisions and as there are many
rivers and creeks in Rakhine State, the main mode of
transport is waterways. The construction of motor
roads were almost impossible. Roads are now being
built systematically and if all the projects are
completed, transport routes linking cities and towns
will emerge as a network between Rakhine State and
other states and divisions, travelling will be
smoother and quicker and trading will be brisk and
with the rapid progress of transport.
Kissapanadi Bridge was built with steel frames and
reinforced concrete floor. The 2,512-foot-bridge has a
six-feet-wide pedestrian way on both sides of the
28-foot-wide motorway. The passage under it is 203 ft
wide with a clearance of 50 ft. The bridge can
withstand 60-ton loads. The construction of the bridge
began on 7 November 1996, It cost 2.02 million US
dollars and K 2,095.8 million.
