Asean leaders ready for Bangkok summit

ASEAN leaders have confirmed that they will attend the first informal =
Asean-United Nations summit in Bangkok in February preceding a major =
conference, Foreign Minister Surin Pitsuwan said yesterday.=20

He said that Indonesian President Abdurrahman Wahid had confirmed his =
intention to participate when he visited Jakarta last week.=20

The informal Asean-UN summit will be the first of its kind and will =
highlight future cooperation between the two organisations. Asean has =
supported the UN's activities and programmes, particularly peacekeeping =
operations and developmental projects.=20

Surin said the top agenda will include cooperation in peace and security =
policy-making, human-resource development and the future role of the UN =
in the region.=20

Asean has supported the UN agenda for peace initiated by UN =
Secretary-General Kofi Annan's predecessor. In 1991, the UN General =
Assembly recognised the Asean Treaty of Amity and Cooperation in =
Southeast Asia as part of the UN resolution.=20

Thailand is hosting the UNCTAD summit on Feb11-12. More than 100 world =
leaders are expected to attend this important symposium which will =
discuss issues related to trade and development. The recent failure of =
world-trade talks in Seattle has raised the significance of this summit =
-- the first economic parley on a global scale after the Seattle fiasco. =
