1. Graduation of first intake at Defence Services Institute of Medicine
Senior General Than Shwe gives guidance to guidance to safeguard Three Main
National Causes In Union spirit door to peace is kept open at all time
YANGON, 17 Dec-The Graduation Ceremony of the First Intake of the Defence
Services Institute of Medicine was held at the DSIM Parade Ground here this
morning, with an address delivered by Defence Services Commander-in-Chief
Senior General Than Shwe. First, Senior General Than Shwe?s graduating cadets
marched past the Defence Services Commander-in-Chief.
Afterwards, the Senior General presented Aungsitthi Award and Excellence in
Training Award to Cadet Thant Lwin San and Excellence in Study Award to Cadet
Aung Moe Myint.
Then, the Senior General Than Shwe delivered an address.He said:
Today is the graduation day of the First Intake of the Defence Services
Institute of Medicine. Having graduated after studying science and medical
subjects at the Defence Services Institute of Medicine, you, Comrades are to
be assigned duties of the medical profession in the Tatmadaw. Just as a
historic milestone is to be erected today for the nation, and Tatmadaw
because you have, rough many years, acquired knowledge and success, it is
also a day when new strength is infused On such an auspicious occasion, I
will solemnly tell you what I have to say.
The aim of establishing the Defence Services Institute o f Medicine is to see
to ,the birth of medical officers with physical and moral prowess required in
the national armed forces which will safeguard Our Three Main National Cause
non- disintegration of the Union non disintegration of national solidarity
and perpetuation of sovereignty. The Defence Services Institute of Medicine,
in keeping with that aim, has fully imbued in you military knowledge up to
the senior Officer level, and, has also seen that you graduate with medical
knowledge at a level as high as other institutes of medicine.
In conclusion, I would like to say that you are the first batch of young
intellectual medical leaders born of the Defence Service Institute of
Medicine. Just as the world today is making progress all-round with the
passage of time, medicine is also making unbelievable strides. Modern and
sophisticated medical equipment are also making strides likewise. Therefore,
you, Comrades must-
-Live up to be exemplary individually and continually study the changes in
medicine, in keeping with the times,
-Strive for better progress and success applying theory have learned at the
Defence Services Institute of Medicine in practice to emerge as good sons who
will uphold the honour of the Institute,
-Strive to uphold the noble traditions of the Tatmadaw and conduct yourselves
befitting good leadership qualities,
Strive to combine the theory you have acquired with practice and experience
and play a part in building and peaceful, modern and developed new
nation,Specially innovate, invent and nurture the habit of studying, not
content with what you have learned thus far and aim at appearing for and
passing post-graduate courses and,
-Not forget the time you have passed at the institute and utilizing your
experience, and while serving your country your and your Tatmadaw, strive to
be ?Valiant doctors? victorious soldier?. With this I conclude.
Then, the Senior left the venue of graduation ceremony. After the ceremony,
the Senior General cordially met two award-winning cadets gather with their
parents at die assembly hall of the Defence Services Institute of Medicine.
Excerpts from Senior General Than Shwe?s address
-For total defence of the developed and modern new nation, a ?strong and
capable Tatmadaw?? is indispensable.
-Medical servicemen must be imbued with the five virtues interest, goodwill,
compassion, sacrifice and example.
-It is because of the Tatmadaw?s good discipline from the time it was
established to date that it is able to remain strong.
-Although our Tatmadaw is designated as Tatmadaw (Army, Navy, Air) according
to the nature of duties, it is the one Tatmadaw in entirety in national
defence.
-Union Spirit is the spirit that binds together all citizens who are under
the National Flag in which ever part of the nation they may reside.
-If agricultural mechanization succeeds, there will be food sufficiency and
while we strive towards that, we must also strive for industrialization.
-Tatmadawmen are prepared for the worst, and, whatever the danger we have to
confront, we have chosen how to tackle what at which stage.
-Tatmadaw is working together with the people for national development in the
various parts of the country with oneness of mind.
-As young leaders you must possess good character and conduct and good
attitude.

2. Senior General Than Shwe and wife Daw Kyaing Kyaing attend dinner to mark
graduation ceremony First Intake of DSIM
YANGON, 17 Dec -A dinner to mark the graduation ceremony of the First Intake
of Defence Services Institute of Medicine was held at the convocation hall of
the DSIM at 6.30 pm today, attended by Chairman of the State Peace and
Development Council Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services Senior General
Than Shwe and wife Daw Kyaing Kyaing.
After the dinner, Myanmarpyi Kyauksein Hsaing waing, Aurora music band of
Myanmar Music Asiayon and Shwelamin Anyeint of Yangon Command presented
entertainment programmes with vocalists at the convocation hall of the
institute.

YANGON, 17 Dec-Chairman of the State-Peace and Development Council
Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services Senior General Than Shwe together with
Secretary- I of the State Peace and Development Council Chief of the Office
of Strategic Studies and Director of Defence Services Intelligence Lt-Gen
Khin Nyunt, Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Chief of
Bureau of Special Operations and Chief of Staff (Army) Lt-Gen Tin Oo,
Secretary-3 of the State Peace and Development Council Adjutant General
Lt-Gen Win Myint, members of the State Peace and Development Council, Deputy
Prime Ministers, ministers and officials viewed the medical science
exhibition 1999 of Defence Services Institute of Medicine at DSIM at 9.20 am
today.
Senior General Than Shwe and party inspected displays of Defence Services
Institute of Medicine room, zoology and botany room, physics and chemistry
room, anatomy and computer room, pharmacy, bio-chemistry room, microbiology
room, clinical pathology from X-rays room, medical education room, Defence
Services Physical Rehabilitation Hospital and artificial limbs room, workshop
medical room, child health room, obstetrics gynecology room, larynxes otology
room, orthopedics medical room, anesthesiology room, special intensive care
unit and cardiac surgery room, surgery room, medical education room, cardiac
special care unit and seminar room for cardiac at the exhibition.
Officials conducted the Senior General and party round the exhibition.

4. Mahasantisukha Buddhist Missionary Centre inaugurated
YANGON, 17 Dec - A ceremony to inaugurate Mahasantisukha Buddhist Missionary
Centre was held in the compound of the Centre, Natchaung Ward, Tamway
Township, this morning, attended by Secretary-l office State Peace and
Development Council Lt-Gen1 Khin Nyunt.
Penang-Singapore Sayadaw Bhaddanta panavamsa formally unveiled the plaque of
the Centre.The Secretary-l also formally unveiled the signboard of the centre.
Minister for Construction Maj-Gen Saw Tun, Minister for Religious Affairs U
Aung Khin and Chairman of Upathaka of the Centre Col Saw Myint (retired)
formally opened the centre.
Then, a ceremony to mark the inauguration ceremony of Mahasantisukha Buddhist
Missionary Centre was held in Adhipadi Hall on the third floor of the Centre.
Magway Sayadaw Bhaddanta Kumara read Sammodaniya Ovadakatha of Myingyan
Sayadaw Bhaddanta Sobhita.
Next, the Secretary-l accepted US $ 100,000 donated by disciples of the
Penang, Singapore Sayadaw from Penang-Singapore and Los Angeles.
The messages of felicitations sent by Malaysia Buddhist Association,
Singapore Buddhist Association, American Buddhist Association, New New
Zealand Buddhist Association, Young Men Buddhist Association of Myanmar,
Myanmar Buddhist Missionary Aphwechoke and Mahasi Buddha Sasana Nuggaha
Aphwechoke were read by respective.chairmen and personnel. Then, the ceremony
came to a close.

5. Basic Computer Course No 3/99 of DAD concludes
Y ANGON, 17.Dec-Basic Computer Course No 3/99 of the Development Affairs
Department of the Ministry for Progress of Border Areas and National Races
and Development Affairs concluded at the Engineer Branch of DAD this
afternoon.
Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo
delivered on address.Speaking on the occasion, Secretary-2 Lt-Gen Tin Oo said
as the Development Affairs Department has successfully opened basic computer
courses for the third time, it can be said that VAD is able to produce human
resources to a certain degree for the progress of the nation and the
department.
The trainees should strengthen their moral development in keeping in the fore
the fine traditions and history of the nation and the people, the high
standard of culture, charitable traditions and culture to make themselves
free from copying or thinking too high of the social systems of the foreign
nations which are not suitable to the people and the country in trying to
acquire international level techniques. One hundred trainees of 50
Development Affairs Committees had completed the three week course.

6. Symposium on Mobilization of Financial Resources for Development in
Myanmar begins
YANGON, 17 Dec- The Symposium on Mobilization of Financial Resources for
Development in Myanmar jointly sponsored by Myanmar Institute of Strategic
and International Studies and Institute of Southeast Asian Studies (
Singapore ) with the support of Sasakawa Peace Foundation (Japan ) was held
at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs this morning.
Present on the occasion were Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs U Khin Maung
Win, officials of Sasakawa Peace Foundation of Japan and Institute of
Southeast Asian Studies (Singapore), Ambassadors of ASEAN countries and
embassy staff, the Japanese Ambassador and staff, senior military officers,
the Director (News) of News and Periodicals Enterprise and officials of
dailies, officials of National AFTA Unit, departmental officials, scholars
from universities, officials of the Union of Myanmar Federation of Chambers
of Commerce and Industry, private banks. research paper writers from Japan,
Indonesia, the Philippines, Malaysia, Singapore and Myanmar.
On behalf of Minister for Foreign Affairs U Win Aung and Minister for Finance
and Revenue U Khin Maung Thein. Director-General U Aye Lwin of ASEAN Affairs
Department and Governor of Central Bank; of Myanmar U Kyaw Kyaw Maung and
Director Prof Chia Siow Yue of ISEAS extended greetings.
Chairman of Sasakawa Peace Foundation Mr Setsuya Tabuchi presented a paper on
Internationalization of Yen. Before this symposium, the Workshop on
Mobilization of Financial Resources for Development in Myanmar was held in
Singapore from 29 to 30 October 1998 as a first phase for the whole research
project. The present symposium is the final phase of the research project.
Myanmar participants from Institute of Economics, Central Bank of Myanmar and
Ministry of Finance and Revenue presented papers on the first day symposium
together with participants from Japan and Singapore. The second day of the
symposium continues tomorrow.

7. Minister meets Chinese entrepreneurs
YANGON, 17 Dec-Minister for Industry-l U Aung Thaung met Chief Representative
Ms Luo Yan and party of China National Constructional & Agricultural
Machinery Import and Export Corporation who called at his office this
afternoon.

8. Myanmar Two Millennia Conference concludes
YANGON, 17 Dec- A ceremony to conclude the Myanmar Two Millennia Conference
organized by Universities Historical Research Department was held at
International Business Centre this morning.
Director-General Daw Ni Ni Myint of Universities Historical Research
Department gave the concluding remarks.Resource persons from Myanmar and
abroad presented 44 papers archeology history, fine arts, culture, Buddhism,
economy, politics and law related to the Myanmar at the conference.

9. 46 members resign from Monyo Township NLD
YANGON, 17 Dec-Forty-six members resigned from the National League for
Democracy of Monyo Township, Bago Division.
Forty-six members of Monyo Township NLD, Bago Division, of their own
volition, resigned by sending letters of resignation to Monyo Township
Multiparty Democracy General Election Commission Office and the party
concerned on 5 October 1999 as they no longer wished to participate in party
politics of NLD.
