(1) Secretary-1 Presents Prizes to Outstanding
Students

    Chairman of Myanmar Education Committee Secretary-1
of the State peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin
Nyunt presented prizes to students who passed the
matriculation examination, for their outstanding
performance in 1998-99 academic year, at the Basic
Education High School No.2 in Sangyoung Township on 10
December. The 1998-1999 matriculation examination was
held at 886 examination centres in states and
divisions by 11 university examination boards; out of
about 400,000 candidates of the entire nation, 112,
722 passed the examination; when outstanding students
who got the positions ranging from the first to the
tenth have been selected according to the order of
merit, altogether 26 outstanding students have
emerged. 

(2) Medical Equipment Donated to Hospital 

    Under the medical exchange programme between two
countries, University Hospital of Caen (CHU) of France
donated medical equipment to Yangon General Hospital,
Eye, Ear, Nose and Throat Hospital and Orthopaedics
Hospital. Ambassador of France and Professor Allein
Suisse of University Hospital of Caen presented
medical equipment of Minister for Health, who accepted
the donation and presented certificates of honour to
the donors.

(3) First South-East Asian Canoe Championship Begins

    The opening ceremony of the First South-East Asian
Canoe Championship took place at the Myanmar Rowing
and Canoeing Federation, Inya Lake, Yangon on 10
December. General Secretary of International Canoe
Federation Mr. Otto Bonn, General Secretary of Asian
Canoe Federation Mr. Ali Ghlamsiyah and managers,
coaches and athletes of the nations, namely, Brunei
Darussalam, Cambodia, the Philippines, Singapore,
Thailand, Vietnam and Myanmar were also present. The
South East Asian Canoeing Federation was founded on
17th October 1997, in Jakarta, Indonesia Canoe
competition was officially included in the (19th) SEA
Games held in Jakarta, Indonesia in 1997. 
    The 1st South-East Asian Canoe Championship, 1999,
was held at Myanmar Rowing and Canoeing Federation,
Inya Lake, later on the same day. Myanmar team won
eight gold medals in eight events of the competition.
The teams of Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, the
Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam and host
Myanmar are taking part in the competition on 10
December. In Men's 1000-metre single Kayak event,
Myanmar won the first prize, Indonesia the second and
Vietnam the third. In Women's 1000-metre single Kayak
event, Myanmar won the first prize, Thailand the
second and Vietnam the third. In women's 1000-metre
double Kayak event Myanmar won the first prize,
Vietnam the second and Thailand the third. In men's
1000-metre double canoe event, Myanmar won the first
prize, the Philippines the second and Thailand the
third. In men's 1000-metre double cayak event, Myanmar
won the first prize, Indonesia the second and Vietnam
the third. In men's 1000-metre quadruple Kayak event
Myanmar won the first prize, Thailand the second and
Vietnam the third. In women's 1000-metre quadruple
Kayak event, Myanmar won the first prize, Thailand the
second and Malaysia the third. The competition
continues on 11 December. 

(4) Stone Age, Bronze Age Implements Donated to
National Museum

    Stone Age and Bronze Age implements together with
beads of Pyu Era(10th Century) were donated by
well-wishers to the National Museum through the Office
of Strategic Studies. Of them, nine objects were three
tiger-shape figurines and six beads, and they were
found by the donors while digging the earth for
construction of a school building on their plot in
Ywahtingon Village, Pyawbwe Township, Mandalay
Division. Two bronze weapons and two stone weapons
were found in Ganan region, Banmauk Township, Saging
Division. The two bronze weapons axes which were used
in Myanmar Bronze Age. Of the stone weapons, one was
used in late Stone Age and the other two in early
Stone Age.

(5) Myanmar Mayflower bank Opens Branch In Myingyan

    Myanmar Mayflower bank Limited  opened its 19th
branch in Myingyan, Mandalay Division, on 8 December.
Myanmar Mayflower Bank Limited had been opening
branches throughout the country to provide banking
services for the public and national entrepreneurs of
respective areas. The bank would contribute towards
regional development manufacture of goods for export
and purchase of machinery. A total of 1,617 persons
deposited over K 41 million on the opening day of the
branch in Myingyan.

(6) Workshop on Cultivation Oil Crop Canola Held

    A workshop on cultivation of oil crop Canola jointly
sponsored by Myanma Farms Enterprise, Myanmar
Agriculture Services and Agricultural Mechanization
Department and Huile Trading Co Ltd of Australia, was
held in the meeting hall of Myanma Farms Enterprise on
10 December. Director of Coffee Cultivation Division
of Myanma Farms Enterprise  explained matters related
to oil crop Canola. Director of Huile Trading Co Ltd
Mr. Lawrie Raymond and Mr. Paul A Parker of New South
Wales of Australia explained matters pertaining to
cultivation of Canola.
